Actually, aluminum would be
easier
to use in something like thei - though it's not magnetic, if you impose a fluctuating magnetic field of sufficient flux density on it, the eddy currents induced in it will create a magnetic field that will be violently repelled by the original field.
I agree that the gun shown is a bit small, but the Navy is actually working on rail gun designs. They may not get near light speed, but they will work.
The actual mass required to be quite devastating would be quite small, assuming you could reach that sort of velocities, since relativistic effects would kick in. -

-Energy sufficient to propel a bolt to near the speed of light can be contained in a battery small enough to be carried on a belt.
-It makes sense to use that energy in a complicaed way instead of just tossing the battery at the enemy and shorting it out. -

AFter killing numerous vandalism, destruction, and deaths of security guards, John Kruger and his companion can still get away scott-free.
Kruger and his companion (forgot her name) can illegally climb into the window without intervention at all.
A boss angry at his employee will commit suicide instead of shooting the employiee.
Once the boss commits suicide, less than a second later people will start rushing in. -

Russian Mafia gang members can't beat a tiny group of lightly-armed civilians.
You should always help a friend-turned-traitor who tried to kill you numerous times and take the risk he might try to shoot you.
The cops wait long enough for a fierce gun battle and hand-to-hand fight to ensue before showing up.
Some Marshals will shoot their own people before giving them their evaluation.
Some people take a good look at Arnold and think he would need help moving a sofa. -

LOL chaticleer: "Once the boss commits suicide, less than a second later people will rush in"
Corny! I dont know why you pointed it out but I love it!
Another lessons learned from Eraser
That the scene "Arnold chats with wisecracking young black kids after landing from the sky" doesn't really flow that well -

"- If said bolt, traveling at nearly the speed of light, hits the fleshy part of a human thigh, it will not pass through, but rather come to a complete halt and remain stuck in the thigh, requiring it to be removed manually."
That was a piece of wood from the building, no?
Do you see? -

After being shot in the arm, it is so easy to use one arm to hang on to a huge crate and the other to lift a woman to safety, without suffering extreme pain.
Also, when said crate drops from about 50 feet in the air while you're on top of it, you just simply get up without suffering broken bones, head injuries, or possibly even being killed.
