I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise but he did a great job in this movie.
It's the only one I can stand him in.
Your loss. Just because you don't like an actor, it doesn't mean that they're not good in the movie.
Also, the movie is great for other performances as well. Sad you're so narrow-minded that you won't even give it a chance.

I think Tom Cruise "the person" is a real jerk, to the point I no longer look at his movies (though I might if I thought it would be a really first class film). But I can't imagine any other actor doing a better job at this role. I think he was remarkable, and showed a real range in it.

True. He does that a lot, but I wouldn't say it's that format in every single film. Watch Tropic Thunder, Interview with the Vampire, Minority Report, and Collateral. Those roles are so different. Also, check out Born on the Fourth of July and Magnolia. That formula kinda fits with these two, but they are different, unique, and he's excellent in them!

Jim Carrey was the first choice but passed up on it.

Jim Carrey would have done fine on the funny silly bitsbut he can't get himself out of the role of Stanley Ipkiss with the silly faceshe really is a one dimensional actorTom Cruise is more versatile than people give him credit for and he is gorgeous to bootno one else could have layed this role better..I can't believe they had anyone else in mind.

Why are people disliking Tom Cruise so much?

Baloney! Read the trivia page. It was written with Tom Hanks as JM, but TH was coming off two consecutive oscars and had directing gig scheduled. Just checkout the list of other actors considered. Nowhere is Carrey listed.

Cruise is terrific in this. One of his best roles and performances. Shows he can do comedy. I miss comedies like this one. Nowadays, most comedies are silly with way too much gross-out humor and foul language and people acting like blithering idiots.

I understand as I'm not a Cruise fan either but this is actually one of the few movies I can bear him in. He plays the role well and I definitely can't see Hanks in the role even though he's a far better actor.
You're missing out; it's not a brilliant film but it's definitely worth watching (maybe you've watched it since 2011 but I doubt it).
