Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Boogie Nights

    The Dark Knight
    Return of the Jedi
    Toy Story
    Jurassic Park
    Barry Lyndon
Hmmm something tells me the Top 250 is really just a crock of sh!t!

Ha, nothing wrong with those movies (I mean, personally I never liked Jurassic Park so I'll give you that and I never seen Barry Lyndon, but it is Kubrick so it gotta be worth at least half of something right off the bat), if nothing else they are all staples of their genres I do agree with you though, Boogie Nights should be up there, and if I looked over the list I'm sure I could find at least 100 movies on there far less worthy.
If it's any consolation it's on the "They-Call-Me-Steve top 250" list, probably even top 20.

I think these movies really shouldn't be in the Top 250:
        Lord of the Rings
        The Intouchables
        Gladiator
        Guardians of the Galaxy
        Wall-E
        Aliens
        Snatch
        L.A. Confidential
        Django Unchained
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
        X-Men: Days of Future Past
        The Avengers
        A Beautiful Mind
        The King's Speech
        Monsters Inc.

Agreed. I actually think LA Confidential should be higher than it is.

I recently watched LA confidential again..and at the time it was an amazing movie..ground breaking action scenes..good plot. After seeing it NOW though, i didnt think it stood the test of time. Thats kind of a true marker of a classic. Boogie Nights Fits the bill. Its Timeless..even now its good.
                I completely agree.

I disagree on LOTR. But other than that I don't disagree with you, and even though I love Django Unchained, Guardians of the Galaxy and Aliens, they shouldn't be there.

Wall-E for me is the best animated movie ever!

Gladiator was fking baddass. to say that doesn't belong in the top100 even means your taste is in your assss.

I agree with some of these. Disagrees with others. Like Aliens for example, are you serious? That is like the magnum opus of Sci-Fi Action Thrillers. Far better than Alien which feels a bit outdated, but is still good.

Barry Lyndon is one hell of a movie, way better than Boogie Nights which is also a great movie but nowhere near BL's league

Boogie Nights is great and should be in the top 250.
However, all of the other ones listed are great too with the exception of Barry Lyndon which is okay but certainly not Kubrick's best.

Return of the Jedi is a great movie? Really? Star Wars with muppets? The only saving grace in that film is the Emperor. Without him, that movie is nothing.
Also, saying Barry Lyndon is a better movie than Boogie Nights is really a matter of opinion. It's like comparing apples and oranges. I for one would rather watch Boogie Nights any day as I barely was able to make it through one sitting of the excruciatingly slow Barry Lyndon.

Well, yes. As is everything else we're discussing on here (including your comments about Return of the Jedi). That goes without saying!

Mercader79 - Then why are we discussing anything at all if it just comes down to a matter of opinion?

Absolutely. Also it's one of the few films that give the top 250 some credibility.

Boogie Nights belongs in the top 10, granted, but your list of supposed atrocities could be improved. Listing Barry Lyndon in particular equates to a red herring. Toy Story and Jurassic Park are also very worthy.
