Barry Lyndon is one hell of a movie, way better than Boogie Nights which is also a great movie but nowhere near BL's league

Boogie Nights is great and should be in the top 250.
However, all of the other ones listed are great too with the exception of Barry Lyndon which is okay but certainly not Kubrick's best.

Return of the Jedi is a great movie? Really? Star Wars with muppets? The only saving grace in that film is the Emperor. Without him, that movie is nothing.
Also, saying Barry Lyndon is a better movie than Boogie Nights is really a matter of opinion. It's like comparing apples and oranges. I for one would rather watch Boogie Nights any day as I barely was able to make it through one sitting of the excruciatingly slow Barry Lyndon.

Well, yes. As is everything else we're discussing on here (including your comments about Return of the Jedi). That goes without saying!

Mercader79 - Then why are we discussing anything at all if it just comes down to a matter of opinion?

Absolutely. Also it's one of the few films that give the top 250 some credibility.

Boogie Nights belongs in the top 10, granted, but your list of supposed atrocities could be improved. Listing Barry Lyndon in particular equates to a red herring. Toy Story and Jurassic Park are also very worthy.

Barry Lyndon isn't for everyone. It is very slow, do you agree?
Also, I would consider Toy Story and Jurassic Park in the Top 250 if I was, lets see 7 years old perhaps?

I don't agree. Barry Lyndon is riveting. Toy Story and Jurassic Park are exceptionally well made films. I don't know if they would make my personal list, but I can definitely understand their place on that list in general.

                            Barry Lyndon
Ehr What the hell? Paul Thomas Anderson himself would probably be quite impressed with that statement. The critical reception of Barry Lyndon goes way beyond anything PTA has ever done. Now that doesn't dictate that it's better but I'm just saying (perhaps it's not the best movie too choose for such a thread).
And whats wrong with Return of the Jedi (I mean you listed that and not the 2 others)?
Toy Story is a damn good animation movie and I think the first big feature 3d animation film.
Jurasic Park is really good aswell. The dinos were the entire premise but it worked, can't blame the movie for that.
The Dark Knight is problematic yeah.
But I don't get why you pick theese films. I mean films like Platoon, The Green Mile, The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers are up there.
You see things; and you say Why? But I dream things that never were and I say Why not?

Jurassic Park is pure Hollywood with totally inaccurate dinosaurs - raptors were only the size of a medium sized dog in real life. T Rex' were way smaller too. After reading all the inaccuracies about it, the film really lost a lot of respect from me. Oh yeah, there were also no venomous or poison spitting dinosaurs. But either way, I chose to use these films as examples because for me, they're not nearly in the same league as Boogie Nights.

Who cares about inaccuracies? Fact is, Jurassic Park was a landmark film for special effects and Toy Story was a landmark film for animation. Both are perfectly enjoyable for adults as well as kids. Outside of their technical achievements they remain incredibly well-crafted films.
EDIT - it should probably be noted that dilophosaurus spitting is present in the novel.
Barry Lyndon is a classic. It's paced slowly, but that doesn't mean it isn't any good.
Boogie Nights is exceptional though. I love when Anderson keeps the camera on for those tracking shots, complete with the camera pans. The track through the club at the beginning and the track on Macy before
he kills his wife and commits suicide
are great. I really like the scene in Magnolia where Donnie walks into the bar.
                                Great use of music too.
But why take any notice of the top 250? You could make another list of over 1000 films that someone could make an argument for being there.

One of the most affecting movies about human beings I've ever seen, you go through every emotion watching this movie, it's a masterpiece!

These days the largest demograph voting for the Top 250 are obviously somewhere around 16-22yr old males. After they go to the theater they immediately get online and give a bunch those films a "10". It's obvious when you look at the amount of votes new flicks are getting.
Boogie Nights should definitely in the Top 250. These films should definitely not be on the list, even if it's not Boogie Nights which replaces them :
                                    The Truman Show
                                    Shutter Island
                                    Twelve Monkeys
                                    X-Men: Days of Future Past
                                    Rush
                                    How to Train Your Dragon
                                    V for Vendetta
I can think of at least 20 other flicks which should replace those.

Boogie Nights is such a great anthem of the dysfunctional porn "family" of the 1970s, that holds up to this day.if it's not in the top 100 let alone 250, then the list has no credibility in my eyes. Just think of how many careers this single movie launchedit ain't by accident.
