as additional info, extending the helpful definition supplied above, which, in terms of this movie, is certainly sufficient, the term "trick" arrived in gay culture from the lingo in the world of prostitutes, where a "trick" is the customer of a prostitute, similar to the slang term "john." The term retained its connection to someone you hook up with for sex in a one night stand, but dropped (in the sense of how it's normally used in gay culture, and in this film) the connection to prostitution.

'one night stand','affair', 'fling'.
No one I know gay still uses the term "trick" to describe their gratuitous sex partners. It's stereotype camp speak from the 90's.

I think there's also a slight double meaning in the movie title. Of course, trick mainly refers to a one-night stand/pick up. But I also think it refers to a "trick of fate" in how the 2 guys meet, then actually become closer because they can't find a place to hook up.

This discussion made we want to see "Trick" again, which I did the other day. It turns out I'm not such an interesting commentator and observermaybe just a guy with a quirky memory: during the closing credits a song called "Trick of Fate" played!

A trick is, primarily, the client of a prostitute.
It was supposedly used by gay men for a person one has picked up for the purposes of casual sex.
I have never called my casual partners that, nor do my friends. I suspect it is an obsolete usage. Jim Fall, the director of this film, is like 50 years old.
