It would been departure from his lighter roles. Watching him in charlie wilson war showed he can play character with edge to them. He even played dark character in road to departure. Spacey was good but hanks would been more interesting choice

Yes, I'd bet Hanks would have done well, as would any number of different good actors of the right age range. Each would have played it a bit different and each resultant movie would have been a bit different. But it is what it is, we can never know how it would have been with a different actor, even Hasnks!!

It's believable that Benning and Spacey would be married. Even in his menial role , employment-wise, he otherwise has a Clarke Gable-ish old school big head arrogance to him that she would have found appealing.

Hanks is great, and while he would have done a good job, it wouldn't hold a candle to Spacey's. Spacey is PERFECT in this role.
