    So live in the wild.
I want to kill people like you. You know what stops me? Another social construst. You enjoy that huh because you're not ending dead right!? But you like to beep around. And thats when you're pointing out social constructs that don't suit you. Nice. 😉

Look upon me! I'll show you the life of the mind!

      Omgoodness Judas..
      Calm down, dear. Calm down.
I was actually joking and you really need to take some anger management classes. Kill me? Seriously?
      Listen to yourself.
Almost anything can be seen as a social construct. I know this. Calm the beep down and loosen up a little.

Cosmo Reif is right and astute in his retort, contrary to yours which is just trying to be personal.
        BTW film stinks.

Well, I think if I were in a comparable situation I would think it's a great thing to do, full of warmth, compassion and selflessness and not reduced to having sex with another another person each month (that's not what the movie is all about, even if nowadays people tend to reduce everything to a purely sexual level). It's about love, not sex and that is why the movie is so brilliant ;-).

sex can be about making love and it can be sex. Pure attraction.

Yes she is a slut. You can not love a different person every month. That is not love. I won't attempt to analyze her motivations, but they probably have to do with conquest and/or empowerment.
Monogamy may be a social construct, but so is the word slut. By definition she is onesimple as that. If you think its ok to be a slut, then more power to youdoesn't change what the word means.

Sure she's a slut. But then if you follow that line of thought then so is every guy who sleeps with a different girl every month/week/night.
It really floors me that there's such a double standard in this world.
I don't see why she has to be called a slut, if I was dying why not sleep with people? It's a natural act. There's nothing wrong with it. And the word slut has such a negative tone to it.
So no. She's not a slut.

hmm, yeah she's is a bit of a slag though slut, whore, whatever, same difference. guys, girls, whomever, they're all in the same boat.
that being said, i don't actually think she slept with every guy of the month and even if she did, she's dying, so maybe she was just like, beep it, why don't slut it up a bit? better being promiscuous than suicidal, i guess.
It's mercy, compassion and forgiveness I lack. Not rationality

Depends on your culture, religion, and philosophy. From your statement I am gathering that from you viewpoint she would be a slut, and from the other guy's comment that from his viewpoint she is not? Love has many definitions in many different contexts - The JudeoChristian definition being only one of many and even within that context there is variation in the definition.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/love has nine alone including one specifically for the Christian subset of those who believe in Christian Science. While other cultures and religions not as common in the United States an UK as the aforementioned do allow for allowances that involve being 'in love' with more than one partner at the same time, even within the realm of JudeoChristian one can love in a non-sexual context many people at the same time.
Slut usually conotates a) slovenly and/or b) prostitute and/or c) promiscuous. She doesn't fit into a or b so that leaves c, which if you live in the SF Bay Area (like the character does) is debateable if she should be considered one or not. I don't think she fits being especially promiscuous for one in this culture, though I am personally a prude for this area next to her. I'd say she's probably average for this culture - good or bad.

Our sad culture often whips out the word 'slut' or other negative terms whenever a woman does anything having to do with 'conquest and/or empowerment.'

The thing is, Sara never really confirmed it. Even when Nelson asked about it. Her answer(s) always went around the question. So she probably did or didn't sleep with every month guy she had, except for September.

I didn't dissect the script but I believe when asked she did not have any projects prior to October. She stated the October was shy and there was no September. So I don't believe she deserves the term slut be applied to her character.
What exactly are the qualifications required for such a designation? More than 2, 3, 5,or 10 sexual relationships? It's sad that there are people so shallow as to attach a term like slut to a character in a movie. Especially when the reasoning behind such a conclusion is implied.
Who knows, maybe Abner was the shy October project. Something to think about.
BTW, I think it's a great movie. I'm not a big Keanu Reeves fan but I think he did a pretty good job. Charlize on the other had gives it all to her craft. She can speak with her eyes and say it all as she did in this movie.

If the sex roles were reversed in this movie, and a man was changing partners every month, what would you call him? What's the negative male term for "slut"? Seriously, try to think of one, and I'm betting the ones you come up with are actually compliments. Double standard indeed.

The only one I can think of is manwhore, but I think even that one can be used in a positive light from time to time.
In order to really help her 'projects' she needed to build the most intimate, trusting relationship possible. With most people, sex is a part of that. It would also let her help with their intimacy issues (like Nelson rushing things). I don't doubt for a second that she didn't truly and deeply care for every one of her 'projects,' or that her intentions were anything but pure.

Ok, first of all, we're not talking about the double-standards between the sexual conquests of men and women, and the difference in opinion on the two. If you want to discuss that, start a thread about it. Anyway, I digress.
You know, I do a pretty similar thing with all of my girlfriends. I act like a total prick, and then when I've totally demoralized them, physically, mentally and psychologically, and made them feel like crap, I leave them. And just as I walk out the door, I leave them with the last words I'll ever say to them -
'I was just doing this for your benefit honey! Think about it. You've learned better understanding, compassion, forgiveness and obedience. And in the long run this break-up will give you the capability to deal with rejection on a much wider scale.
So I'm actually a pretty cool guy. See ya'
Same premise after all isn't it. Its a total cop-out, and just simply gives me a poor excuse to be a horrible specimen, but I can tell them that I'm just being a nice person and helping them grow as a human being. The fact that I was horrible before I came up with this excuse is irrelevent, rather than the other way around. Just like the fact that she was probably a slut before she decided to come up with hers. See how I flipped it?
