OP so in your opinion a humans life is worth 10 dogs?
Well i pity those who feel we are the only thing that matters on this planet how selfish has our species become?
I have 2 dogs and i always think about what i would do if there was an earthquake or tornado. and guess what.
every time i think about it.. i think how to save them or get them on their leashes so i can make sure they dont get hurt. Never do i think . will I try to save the dogs or save myself
the answer to that is obvious I would much rather die trying to save whom I love.. than to live as a coward knowing i could hjave done more.

It doesn't even have to be a species thing. People care more about the lives of anyone and anything they're attached to than those trying to kill them.
That said, it wasn't even a question of this or that by that point. He had been found out and it was now him vs 10 other humans. Switch places and tell me which you would choose
A little common sense would have gone a long way to solving your problem.
