    Do you mean where did he go or how did he afford it? My guess is that he was making enough money in Seattle to swing a backpack trip across Europe as he had no real ties to the family business. It seems like a cliche' now, though.

        I'd say, with nobody to support and very little expenses, he could swing it on what he was making in Seattle. There was a tie-in book called Better Living Through Dying and I'm pretty sure it gave the idea he was savvy enough to live cheap via other people.

          There used to be some jobs that enabled you to do a lot of travel on the employer's dime. For instance, there was a job as an international courier to carry valuable stuff in person to a foreign location.
