I was asking myself why does she look that way? Was it supposed to be a "look"? Or was she a frumpy despressed teen? She seemed to have a bunch of friends. It wasn't like she was some loser-loner. She was in an up mood often - okay maybe drug induced, but depressed people do dope to medicate and zone out. She didn't.

Clearly you've never suffered from depression. its not something that makes sense to anyone who's never experienced it i dont think. because there doesnt seem anything wrong, so why are they so miserable and cant cheer up? or, why are they so crazy when 5 minutes ago they were on top of the world?
I think she's a great example of someone with depression, whos trying not to be depressed. they dont all wallow in it all day. they might have a really good long phase of being happy, like nicole was with carlos, then something happens and it all catches up again.
and yeah, she just didnt care how she looked. maybe part of her depression, part of her crazy freespiritedness. she showed glimses of making an effort in her clothes, but yeah, her hair was always greasy. i think the clue is in the first scene, where she goes to school in what she wore to bed. clearly, just past caring what people think of her. if someone's going to like her, its for her, and not who she percieves herself to be.
hope that helps you understand why she looked so daggy, and why she behaved how she did. -

She stood out more, and used character rather than looks to meet people, also she was clearly depressed, in which case you won't exactly care about the lastest fasion accesory or sticking a bra on.
Also she was sexyplain and simple, I loved how she presented herself in this movie, obviously she wasn't very conventionaly attractive. -

I'll sort of echo what everyone else has said. It's all apart of her character. Nicole was wild and eccentric. She marched to the beat of her own drum. She didn't care what people thought and she wasn't worried about conforming to traditional standards of "beauty". I thought her image totally fit her free spirited persona. Yes, Carlos was the pretty boy and the athlete. But the fact that he was so attracted and drawn to her is what I love about this movie. Opposites really do attract. And I'm actually glad they didn't make her all pretty and glamorous. It was refreshing to see the leading lady in a movie not look like a damn supermodel for once. Realistically, I went to high school with more girls who looked unkempt than those who got all dolled up everyday.
