Kathy's character was a lawyer who was Joe's next-door neighbor & obviously a long-time friend to Joe and his wife. The person she'd lost was her significant-other, as she was clearly in a same-sex relationship of great importance - not something casual. And yes, from a dramatic construction point of view, she's the confidant that allows Joe to verbalize a lot of what's going on by just being there and being trusted.

i thought she lost her daughter? i just watched it for the first time last night but was trying to watch it through 2 screaming, fighting children so i may have misunderstood. i thought it was a pretty good movie so i'll just have to watch it again when i get a chance.

And you know what - I just watched most of it last night and "Hannah" (about who's death Miriam [Bates]refers) is never specified as to personage or relationship, so your take is just as valid as mine. Kathy's character was just so "butch" in her dress and hair and all, I just got that impression, but that's all it is - an impression - but once it was in my head it made sense and I went with it. I don't think it matters - the point is that someone named "Hannah" with whom she was close died and she knows what Joe's going through. But watch it again and see if you get why I thought that.

yes i noticed that she was kinda butchy. i think the reason i thought it was her daughter was because i was watching at my aunt's house with her and she said it was her daughter so i just assumed it was. i do definitely want to watch it again though. really good movie!

Kathy Bates character is listed as Mrs. Belmont. Maybe she was married and had a daughter. Maybe she was married, divorced/widowed and found Hannah
instead of a man. Maybe they gave her a butch look to confuse us. Seemed to work. -

The reason I thought Hanna was Bates' girlfriend, or at least antoher grown-up, was the line with all the daisies, something with Hanna having said that Bates' character could see Hanna was watching over her when Bates saw a daisy with only one petal. To me, that sounded a bit too mature for a kid to say. And she apparently lived with Hanna in the house ("you didn't leave when Hanna died" or something, said by Joe), so that implies something romantic.
