yes i noticed that she was kinda butchy. i think the reason i thought it was her daughter was because i was watching at my aunt's house with her and she said it was her daughter so i just assumed it was. i do definitely want to watch it again though. really good movie!

Kathy Bates character is listed as Mrs. Belmont. Maybe she was married and had a daughter. Maybe she was married, divorced/widowed and found Hannah
instead of a man. Maybe they gave her a butch look to confuse us. Seemed to work.

              wasn't it obvious?
she was there so that kevin costner could constantly just yell at her to look after the bird while he goes running around the world

The reason I thought Hanna was Bates' girlfriend, or at least antoher grown-up, was the line with all the daisies, something with Hanna having said that Bates' character could see Hanna was watching over her when Bates saw a daisy with only one petal. To me, that sounded a bit too mature for a kid to say. And she apparently lived with Hanna in the house ("you didn't leave when Hanna died" or something, said by Joe), so that implies something romantic.

Yeah, I got that impression too I hope Costner's character paid her royally for all the work she did at his house, because all the while she couldn't have gotten a lot of lawyer work done.

Yes, a lesbian love. It is no neccessary she mentioned it because they know so well to each other. So we figured it by another things.
