Since "Heat" Bobbie has been cashing in on his acting talent like few others. It used to be that a De Niro movie was an event. Unfortunately he has become a sellout for the money. He makes 3 or 4 movies a year and all of them are totally forgetable.
What a waste of a former formidable talent. -

Your right, since "Heat" he hasn't had any success or made any good movies
oh except for: "The Fan", "Sleepers" , "The Score" , "Jackie Brown" , "Ronin" , and , "Meet the Parents"
For a guy, who could have easily fallen to being type casted as an Italian Mafia Personality, I think he has done a great job finding new and different roles, exploring his abilities as an actor, and just because a movie doesn't reach the success of say "Godfather 2" doesn't mean the film or his work in it isn't great. -

Lets be serious,
The Fan - Didn't See, no comment
Sleepers - Actor like Deniro takes a supporting actor role, that says alot to me.
The Score - The epitaimy of a decent predicatble, ok to watch on video movie.
Jackie Brown - Watching Samuel L. Jackson over act for 2 hrs, go see Pulp Fiction, but Deniro was good.
Ronin - People liked this movie? He didnt leave the CIA, wow what a shocker, and the 87 twists at the, didnt work.
Meet the Parent - Great
Is a Deniro movie a huge event anymore, no. But he still can put out some good ones, in City By the Sea he was bland though, I think he is leaning toward comedy cause he just isnt willing to put what he used into a character.- my 2 cents

Was precisely does this tell you?? - An actor who plays a supporting role in a good movie instead of a leading role in a bad one, derserves my respect.
The Score - The epitaimy of a decent predicatble, ok to watch on video movie.
The movie was okay, like you said, but it was great fun to see the three actors Brando-deNiro-Norton, which I consider to be the best in their respective "generations", joined in one movie.

my take on it
City By The Sea was a pretty good film, and deNiro was good in it and since Heat he hasnt done any extremely good films, with the exception of Wag the Dog which was absolutely AWESOME, one of my fav movies of all time great acting by Bobby and dusty hoffman altho Hoffman did sort of steal the show, it was because his character was a bit more complex than that of deniro's I actaully liked Analyze This alot, i thought it was a very original comedy and was hilarious, one of the funniest movies ive seen Sleepers was a good film in my eyes, although DeNiro's part wasnt big, it didnt need to be.. Hoffman had a small part as well Jackie Brown was pretty good although DeNiro didnt really play a big part in it.. i thought his performance in The Fan was awesome, a very hard one to pull off, although the film wasnt exactly the best his performance was very good so in conclusion, has bobby fell off? not really, is he as good as he was before, no

Not so, He is brilliant in anything and everything he is in, try Awakenings, the Score, Cape Fear, The Fan, This Boys life, Stone, Casino, HEAT, to name a few that he is great in and not a mobster. Heat he is the bad guy so to speak I guess, but this is his best i think, for me anyway, what about Raging Bull and Taxi Driver? I guess you could class these as the bad guy ones too, still amazing talent no matter what role he is in, the thing about De Niro is he does not really act, he "BECOMES" Also Flawless(99) he is not the bad guy. He's one of the greatest of all time everyone who knows cinema knows this. Duh.
Oh guess we should not forget the Deer Hunter, no mob guy there! -

I actually like his performance in City by The Sea, despite the fact the movie itself is not great. There are two types of De Niro movie, the 'appearance' type, where he turns up reads his lines (more than adequately) and gets paid.
Then there is the 'performance' type, where you can clearly see he is giving it his all. I think this movie is one of those, despite the fact it's not one of the better films he has starred in, but that's not due to his performance.
He is not the only star that turns up for the occasional paycheck, all actors of his stature do it, and who can blame them. After all most of them put in many years without a paycheck getting where they are today. Good luck to them! -

It's pretty wild that 13 years later, De Niro is still cashing in haha. I was never a huge De Niro fan, but I must admit that over 60 years of starring in successful movies each year is an incredible accomplishment
