Its official. King sold the options to the dark tower to j.j. abrams for, who couldn't see this coming lol, $19. haha, seriously tho, this is so freakin cool. i've read these books since i was 8, and now i'll finally get to see roland. it didn't say if it would be for the big screen or for t.v., but based on the content, i'd have to say a mini-series on a movie channel or big screen. anyway, here's the link. scroll down and you'll see the article.

thats freakin' wicked!!! Can't say my fanship for the series goes as far back as yours, as I'm only just now on the last book. But goddam if it isnt the best, most involving, intriging story of all time. this is gonna be an awesome series (of movies i hope, but t.v series just as good). all faith in jj, he should do it justice!

have you read the new comics? they're pretty awesomealthough the first two have only been stuff that we already knewi think we may get some insight on Jericho Hill and what happens after roland, cuthbert, and alain leave mejis. at least, thats what i'm hoping for. and the illustrations are pretty awesome.

What they need to do is have four movies
1: The Gunslinger (Wizard and Glass combined with the Gunslinger)
2: Drawing of the Three (Drawing of the Three and Wastelands)
3: The Wolves (Wolves of the Calla)
4: The Dark Tower (Song of Susannah and the Dark Tower)
Roland should be no one but Sean Bean
Colin Ferral would make a great Eddie, but I don't know if any of them would take the roles.
Some unknown would work for Jake
            Susannah: ??
Walter/Marten/Randall: Paul Bettny or Jeremy Irons
There was a proposal to do it like they filmed LOTR, but the issue came up about fan base. However, in the movie industry, mention the name Stephen King and you have a theater sellout.

Based on both King's and Abrams' past work for ABC, I wouldn't be surprised if it was mini-series for that channel.

it would be kinda hard to do it for abc with all the graphic contentif it was a mini-series, it would have to be on HBO or one of the premium movie channels.

I have thought alot about a cast for the series as I read through it for the second time.
Roland - Daniel Day Lewis (Russell Crowe, are you joking)
Eddie - Jared Leto or Ryan Reynolds if he isn't goofy in the humour
Susannah - Nomi Harris (28 days later)
Jake- a River Phoenix type (think stand by me 1986)
                    Walter- Willem Dafoe
                    Callahan- Liam Neeson
                    Jack Mort- Cillian Murphy
                    Tick Tock Man- Clancey Brown
                    Gasher- Robert Carlyle
                    Jonas- Michael Keaton
                    Mia- Monica Belucci
                    Allie- Ellen Barkin
                    Balazar- Joe Mantegna
I agree with pnitro, the story is too large and complex to fit into typical big screen format, and too expensive. The actor who plays Jake would have to do his entire part in less than two years or the series would suffer from Harry Potter Film Syndrome (actors age much faster that their roles) and no film studio would risk making the entire series, ala LOTR, without knowing how much potential cash can be made. Dark Tower is something that would work well on HBO for many reasons, subject matter freedom, fair plot treatment, shear duration of the tale, less financial risk, and the ability to shoot the entire story as one big show rather than have it all broken down by film studios and Gan forbid it, different actors playing the same roles. JJ Abrams seems like a great choice for the series.

I think the best A-list actor for Roland would be Clive Owen. He really proved himself in Children of Men imo, and i can definately see him in this role. As for the other two popular suggestions, Russel Crowe is way too arrogant and can't do subtle, Viggo Mortenson just isn't a particularly good actor imo. Christian Bale is good choice but is too young imo.
Cort has to be Clint Eastwood.

Russell Crowe is indeed arrogant, but to say he can't do subtle? I think he would make a superb Roland, save for the fact that he doesn't have the tall, lanky frame that we all know Roland has. I think his speech, mannerisms, and the look in his eye just scream Roland.
Clive Owen would be quite a pick as well.

Good suggestions all around, but I would have to say (and you'll have to agree) that Cort would have to be Ron Pearlman.
I can just invision him saying "Maggot!".

I've always pictured Yul Brynner as Cort. But I think he's dead.

Why is everyone throwing Clint Eastwood's name out there for roles that aren't Roland? King has always told the Constant Reader that Roland Deschain IS Eastwood from "The Man with No Name" trilogy, at least physically. At the same time, Eastwood is entirely too old to play Roland at this stage in his illustrious career. So in my mind, he can't be in the screen adaptation (unless its animated, then he MUST be the voice of Roland) because he so much IS Roland that he couldn't possibly play any other role in the movie; it would be like casting Robert Englund in a Nightmare on Elm St. movie but not having him play Freddy (it's a bad analogy, but I think it gets the point across).
That said, if you were to put Eastwood in a Dark Tower movie (or movies), he sure as beep couldn't play Cort. Steven Deschain, maybe. Father Callahan, absolutely (this is the role I WOULD prefer him for, if I didn't have that druthers about Eastwood not being in the movies). But Cort? Cort is bald, stalky, stout, and meaner than hell. Clint Eastwood is none of those things. Ron Pearlman was a great suggestion, and Forrest Whittaker could be brilliant (Cort's race never was specified, remember) in the role. For some reason, I can really see Meatloaf in the role as well (a la Fight Club).
The rest of my cast is below, just for beep and giggles.
                              Roland - Viggo Mortensen, period.
Eddie Dean - Ed Norton, also period.
Henry Dean - Tim Roth or Guy Pearce
Susannah Dean / Odetta Holmes / Detta Walker - Rachel True
Jake - Freddy Highmore, because he's talented and young enough to age with the role.
                              Father Callahan - Ian Holm
The Walkin' Dude / The Man in Black / Walter O'Dim / Marten - Criss Angel (yes, that one) or maybe Steve Buscemi
Cort - Ron Pearlman or Forrest Whittaker
Steven Deschain - Al Pachino, because he's one of the greatest ever and I think he could believably be Mortensen's father.
                              Gabrielle Deschain - Angelina Jolie
                              Alain - Ryan Gosling
                              Burt - Ryan Reynolds
Enrico Balazaar - Robert DeNiro (mostly just to have a better movie than Heat for DeNiro and Pachino to share)
The Crimson King - Michael Clark Duncan
That should cover most of the bases, say thankya.

I just saw the new Beowulf movie, and it struck me that maybe a realistic CGI medium like Beowulf would be perfect for the Dark Tower series. With all the weird and freaky crap that happens in the stories, not to mention young Roland, old Roland, Jake doesn't age, the different persona's of characters like Walter, Susannah having legs, then losing them, then getting Mia's white legs and countless other examples, would be pretty well suited for a CGI film. But all that being said, I don't think Abrams would do CGI and it would probably end up looking fake and crappy and be a disappointment to all us fans.

As Roland I can see Hugh Jackman or Viggo Mortenson playing him. When I saw Jackman in Van Helsing, Roland Sprung into my mind.

I've been reading it over and over again, and I just have to say it: As good as Edward Norton would be for Eddie (and he would be great) he is just too old for the part. Eddie is supposed to be in his twenties, and Edward Norton is going to be at least 40 by the time any Dark Tower movie/series gets into production. Personally, I think Joseph Gordon-Levitt would be really good in the part.

Edward Norton would be perfect for Eddie, but what about Jake Gyllenhaal?? I think he could really pull it off. Maby even Shia Labeouf??? i might be going off on a limb there, but who knows?
for Roland how about Keanu Reaves LMAO JUST KIDDING!!!! but for real, yea i can see Gerard Butler making a good Roland
now ive read the series awhile ago, and this may not seem like a good choice, but for the walter/flagg/etc what about Johnny Depp?

Eddies is around 23/24 when he first meets Roland in The Drawing of the Three.
And I'd have to go with Jeremy Irons for Walter/Flagg/Marten/Farson/Ageless Stranger
