i'd go along with several of the suggestions here, particularly gsybe!, my bloody valentine, philip glass, brian eno and boards of canada. and of course bjork is probably the closest to 'lily chou-chou' herself. some other suggestions:
elysian fields, belle and sebastian, portishead, massive attack, aphex twin's 'ambient works 1&2', lonely china day, sonic youth, the boredoms (from 'super ae' onwards), hisato higuchi, fennesz, tom hecker, and romantic period composers like debussy and satie
and if you're interested in the 'darker' side of the ether:
jesu, isis, boris, earth, sunn o))), sleep, om, red sparowes, pelican, skullflower

oh and i forgot the cocteau twins - great band, and a major influence on faye wong (who was the inspiration for the character lily chou-chou)

No love for Stars Of The Lid? "The Tired Sounds Of" & "And Their Refinement Of The Decline" are completely enrapturing. Also Mono, especially their collaboration with World's End Girlfriend "Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain". If you get the chance see their tour doc "And The Sky Remains The Same As Ever", that band is the best live experience I've had.

I liked the movie but I didn't buy into the whole 'ether' stuff. To me it sounded like bs that was meant to appeal to those who like to make a big fuss about what they think is art. I think that it can say something about the characters in the film but to take it out of the film is just to pose in those characters shoes. So I don't think any music comes from the ether.
