they're both great, but the american is definitely scarier. granted i saw the american first, i still think it's a little better. had more money to use so just spiced it up a bit. but it's definitely a good idea to own both, ju on is still a great movie to own!

The original is definitely worth buying. Please get it. I love horror films of all types, but I was so deflated over the Hollywood version of this film. The plot became typical, the scare more jolt oriented than creepy, and the story less enthralling. I personally like to be drawn into a movie, to be forced to figure out what is going on, along with the charachters. I don't prefer to have it laid out for me. I also think the Ju-On version, with its lower budget, was more creatively creepy than any movie I have seen. We are lacking some serious horror talent in Hollywood, which I guess is why we remake Asian horror flicks. The subtlety of the horror in Ju-On is far superior. Shimizu expresses a serious talent here to work with raw materials to make the horror as creepy as possible without being fake. This is where I differ with many other critics who feel Grudge is superior. I find the potentially real to be much more creepy than the pre-fab effects (like the decaying hand in her hair while she showers) that Hollywood tends towards. Hollywood essentially Americanized the film into what they believe the audience would prefer. I saw the Grudge first and frankly wondered what all the fuss was about. I found it bland. Then I saw an interview with Penn and Teller spouting the merits of the Japanese original. I decided to watch it based on their interview and found myself truly scared for the first time in decades. I do not know of any other movie that would scare me now that scared me like it did when I was a kid. To truly scare an adult who is a horror film fan is a tough job. This is the only movie that truly scared me as an adult. I loved it. I also love making the creepy guttural noise and freaking out my husband at night. 🙂

            A little bit of SPOILERS
I just saw Ju-On for the first time last night, and saw The Grudge a month or so ago. I thought that The Grudge was, like you said, a lot more scary than Ju-on. I also thought that The Grudge explained what happened in the house a little bit more clearly than Ju-On did. I am somewhat confused though, because neither Ju-On nor The Grudge told how Kayako died or Toshio. Well The Grudge showed a brief scene of Toshio being drowned in the bathtub by his father. Other than that, I didn't see how they died. Or any of the other characters for that matter. Not that I really want to see bad things happen, but maybe they could have explained more detail in words or something. Also, I realize that a lot of Ju-On was probably lost in translation to English. So maybe Ju-On did explain things more in depth. I don't knowany insight for me???

I normally think that, but Ju-On really wasn't as scary as the Grudge. I thought the Ringu movies were far superior to their American counterparts; ditto for Dark Water.
But the Grudge was MUCH scarier than Ju-On. Ju-On's plot went in too many places. The Grudge was more focused on a key set of characters. Ju-On introduced more (like the kids exploring the haunted house) that made following the movie a little too confusing.

Well, it's not like her role required great acting skills.

One scene that was deleted from the original Ju-On explains a lotthe woman who died had her throat crushed, but her husband didn't totally kill her. That is where the guttaral noise comes from, and that is why it is so horriblebecause she slowly died instead of a quick flick of the wrist. The original is better than the American version for one reasonhow many who saw the American are bothered by it to this day? Ditto for the Japanese? Trust me, the latter sticks in your mind.

i personally loved The Grudge(2004 can't wait for The Grudge 2!) and i think that it was far superior to Ju-On which was a HUGE letdown for me. I thought that SMG did a terrific job and the film WAS SCARY! also, in The Grudge(2004) there is a deleted scene which shows more of how kayako and toshio were killed but it all was edited (along with the father hanging from the ceiling) for a PG-13 rating.why a PG-13? for profits but i think that the film could have done even better if those scenes were not edited out.

"I am somewhat confused though, because neither Ju-On nor The Grudge told how Kayako died or Toshio"
if you buy the dvd with all the extras, you see a cut scene commented by the director, that shows how takeo killed his wife (although his spirit is just recreating the event). i think the other characters, except maybe tatsuya's wife, don't suffer a violent death as in, broken bones, slit throats, etc. like kayako's they either die like they're in shock or they're dragged into the darkness where their souls become trapped. watch all the interviews and cut scenes on the dvd, it clears up the obscure bits.
although now i'm not so sure if i should've posted this on the other ju-on board. but the dvd explains it 🙂
i was actually reading this thread to see if the grudge was better than ju-on heh. i'm wondering if the hollywood cgi bonanza ruins the movie, cause it usually does. ju-on is great because of that, everything stays hidden until the very last moment so it's a lot scarier 😛

I've been studying this for a whiule in colledge so heres something to clear it up:
Kayako was killed as her husband twisted her neck around, splintering her spinal chord and voicebox which explains why she can only make that weird crackling gurgle sound.
Toshio was drowned by his father after he killed toshio's cat. thats why he appears when the detective is trying to revive toshio in the bathroom, the ghosts relive their deaths remember.
                                        hope that helped!
