Considering the excellent physical shape Redford appears to be in, I can certainly believe him beating the crap out of someone 1/2 his age. Clint in this would have been typecasting. I felt that the gist of the story was about forgiveness and opening one's heart again and I found Redford very effective. I don't think the film was intended as a "buddy" movie.

I disagree. I thought Redford was quite good (and believable) in this movie. He was angry, and he had a gun (which he was firing) so the ex-boyfirend was crapping his pants. So, having the jump on him and being angry, I think Redford could've kicked his butt (in the manner shown, anyway). Maybe not in a one-to-one standing up fist fight, but in the situation shown in the movie, I can see it.

totally, and the ex-bf just got hit with the rifle stock through the window - an old guy once told me though: "An older man can do everything a younger man can, it just hurts" - and as seen in that scene near the end he was in pain for dishing out the beatin'. That was one of the problems I had with the latest Indy movie (besides the aliens, Cate Blanchets accent n stuff) - Jones just was too much of the energiser bunny in his fist fights though I suppose having drank from the Holy Grail he might have been in better shape than normal men but
i digress. the more I see of Robert Redford the more I kick myself for not having watched more of his films in the first place (and I am remedying that)

I thought this was one of Robert Redford's best roles. When he was sitting at his son's grave talking to him I was in tears. Robert seemed to fit his role as a grieving Dad beautifully. I also enjoyed Morgan Freeman and Robert Redford together, they truly seemed like they knew each other for years. What a wonderful movie.

I'd be too embarrassed to post anything on the Internet, let alone criticize anyone else, if I didn't have any better command of the language that this Bozo, and would be mortified to know how few people had any respect for my obviously shallow opinion. But, that's me, not H.L. Mencken, up here (that means you, tusbatz, aka Captain Tasteless). How many ways can you misspell the same name, and be so completely ignorant of it? Let's have a big round of applause for, , well, , another big-mouthed jerk with an Internet connection, and nothing really meaningful to say, basically.
If I begin to die, please take this off my head. This is not the way I wish to be remembered.

Redford is looking more and more like Anne Robinson nowadays

Yeesh There's inept and then there's tusbatz. And I'm not even talking about his/her(its?) grasp of movies. I'm talking about its grasp of life in general. Just existing appears to be too much for it to handle. Maybe Clint should be warned he has a stalker

You're entitled to your opinion. The rest of us believed. Clint probably could have done it, however, I'm not so sure Clint could have shown the change of the character over time. From being a bitter old, grizzled curmudgeon to someone who forgives and warms up to the fact that family is family. And forgiveness isn't so scary.
I'm not sure we were watching the same movie

                            A. You shouldn't criticize someone you can't even spell the name of. (makes you look dumb)
                            B. It's complete blasphemy to say that Robert Redford is ever a "weak link." (his phenomenal career/reputation proves it)
                            C. It's ludicrous to think RR couldn't anyone's ass. (kinda wish he'd kick yours to prove it)
🙂 P.S. I agree with all the other comments disagreeing with this ridiculous thread.

                                A. I have a problem with people picking on other people's spelling (especially when the critic himself has difficulty with sentence structure). We are all different, and some individuals find spelling difficult or even impossible for a variety of reasons. (I knew an otherwise excellent and prolific graduate school professor whose spelling was appalling). That doesn't mean they aren't allowed an opinion. The OP could have cleaned up his manner a bit, but that's a different issue.
                                B. Although I liked Robert Redford in this and most of his other movies, I've certainly seen him as a weak link in some. For example, in "The Horse Whisperer" I thought he came off too creepy when relating to the young girl. He's a great actor and director, but he's not above an occasional slip.

Redford was great in this and took lessons from Sean Connery in meting out old man beatings!

So let me get this straight - it wasn't 'Reddfoerd's acting but rather your limited imagination to stopped you being able to believe Redford could 'kick the crap outta sumbuddy' - let me guess - because Redford is Democrat and Clint's a Republican. I've read some moronic posts on IMDb but this has to be one of the dumbest - which I realise to Republicans won't be seen as a negative thing because you all see dumb as a badge of honour.
