Is that a Marine thing?
I've noticed over the years that in some war memoirs and movies there's a penchant for the author/director use nicknames almost exclusively, and they seem to be all Marine stories, which is sort of strange given how rank conscious they are. The Walking Dead: A Marine's Story of Vietnam, Generation Kill, this movie, and many of Bing West's books come to mind. -

And in James Webb's 'Fields of Fire', the lead character "snake", lamented when a new guy got killed-he was so new he 'didn't even have a name yet'.so yeah, nicknames seems to be a Marine thing-or maybe it's a Military/Infantry thing.
