Yea I agree MovieMania7. I couldn't believe she won the Oscar to. She wasn't THAT GREAT SERIOUSLY. Tons of GREAT ACTRESSES THAT HAVE BEEN ACTING LONGER AND ARE BETTER(ACTING WISE) AND HAVEN'T WON NOT ONE OSCAR BUT SHE WINS ONE ON HER FIRST TRY, WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH TO WIN ON AMERICAN IDOL BUT CAN WIN A PRIZE(Oscar) THAT TAKES SOME PEOPLE A VERY LONG TIME TO ACHIEVE. PLZ. Then people say because of her singing she won the award, wow, she didnt wooo any one at American Idol, but all of a sudden in this movie she is superb. LOL. She wasn't great acting wise in the movie. I agree. Some of the Awards given today are not for the loyal, pure n the talented. Sad. She proved how great of a actress she was in Sex in the City movie huh. LOL. Not great in that movie at all. LOL. And her music CD wasn't good either. No disrespect to her fans as I respect them. This is my opinion.

Yeah..does that change that fact that the Oscar is still sitting in her house, and it STILL belongs to her, and no one else???
No, and it won't, so stop complaining about it, perhaps become a movie star yourself, and TRY to do a better job and get one of your own, and then we can listen to other people whine about how much you didn't deserve it.
This time, Effie White's gonna win.

Of course she's the worst actress to ever win an Oscar. But like I've said right from the beginning, her subsequent acting career will be the true evidence of what acting talent she has. And I was proved right so far. I'm glad she won the Grammy but she has very limited acting ability.
Six inches is perfectly adequate. More is vulgar -

I was watching this film when I remembered that it won a couple of Oscars. Was really stunned that Hudson got the highest acting award because there is no acting. Best song maybe but singing is not acting! There is a reason other awards put musicals in a separate category.
The Oscars have been a joke for many years & this just confirms it.
p.s. is the singing really that good? surely it has been "refined" in the studio? -

The award has never been for "Best Actor/Actress in a Leading/Supporting Role," it's "Best PERFORMANCE" Jennifer Hudson gave us a performance, did she not? It's possible to act while singing which is why other actors in the past have won awards for a musical film. Bringing emotion, charm, wit and heart into a song and not just singing it deadpan enhances a musical performance.

She depends on her singing to cover up her poor acting through the entire duration of the movie. When she is not singing, she may as well not even be there. One of the least deserving Oscar wins in history.
I think that is rather harsh statement about the character development she could only act out what was given to her. She didn't write the movie. I could get into a whole other discussion about that. Loosley based on the Supremes. The movie could have been much more. I think there several legal reasons why the movie didn't develop more and why some parts were accurate and than some were fictious.
I wasn't nearly as critical of the Effie character since Beyonce played Deena. I just don't think Beyonce is that great of an actress. Having said that I still loved Dreamgirls. Jennifer wasn't great but she was good and her singing was awesome. This was also her first movie. In The Secret Life of Bees she brought life to the character Rosaleen and was really great in it. That is also a great read by the way.
I love Anika Noni Rose in all her stuff. -

I actually saw Jennifer Holiday on Broadway as Effie and Jennifer Hudson merely mimicked Holiday's depiction of Effie, the character which she personally developed. Also, Holiday's renditions of the original soundtrack still stands the test of time 30 years later; see for yourself

Jennifer Hudson owed Jennifer Holiday more than thanks for her inspiration. -

I'm going to have to agree with the OP here. Terrible actress. Excellent singer! The Oscar win was a travesty. Especially considering whom she was up against. (Why do actresses like Viola Davis, Angela Bassett get looked over) Rinko Kikuchi and Adrian Babarra ran circles around her.
Another sad day in Oscar history.

I agree with you, she in no way deserved that oscar. Everyone at the oscars when she won was thinking the same thing. All of these amazing actors, watching a great SINGER being awarded an oscar for singing with emotion (pretty much all singers do the same). It's very different than actually acting. The proof is what this oscar winner has done sincehas anyone watched the cringeworthy sex and the city movie? SHE IS ONCE AND FOR ALL NOT A GOOD ACTRESS YOU IDIOTS!

^^This, and what was up with that "She gave us a PERFORMANCE" crap on the first page? IT'S ALL ACCOUNTED FOR! Peformance = Acting, ALONG with whatever musical number is written with the role and singing well SHOULD NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES CONSTITUTE AN OSCAR WIN OR NOMINATION FOR THAT MATTER. Sorry, but it's about the ALL AROUND performance, not belting out "You're Gonna Love Me." I wanted to sound off on such a stupid comment but it was over a year old. lol
