Who thinks Lily was the reacher??

But a big red flag I think, was Lily also providing the audience and the group with a false sense of confidence. She was very jealous and wanted Marshall all to herself. I think Lily also prided herself in the fact that she was Marshalls only women in his life ever. Even though she was getting embarrassed when Marshall was telling his 'hook up stories", she still liked it because she still had to announce she was the only person with Marshall, ever, even though the group knew this already.
She knew Marshall loved her but she liked to fly as close as possible to the sun. I think Lily was also one of those types who was just a professional bluffer. She carried the attitude and confidence that she was the dominant one of the two. I think a lot of women do this who are married to rich men or show promising careers. They act as if the man's world would crumble around them if they were out of the picture without the female and her own self-aggrandizement.
I also honestly don't think it mattered to Marshall whether he was called the reacher or not, but it did to Lily so he just said whatever. Marshall was more of a chill character but I think Lily was just more of an egomaniac (like a lot of NYers) and she just kept using her daily life lying and seeing what she could get away with because she truly believed Marshall wouldn't ever ditch her. -

For all logical reasons, she was defenitely the reacher. I agree with everything you said.
In the context of the show, I guess they made Marshall the reacher because like some other dude said, Lily was always self-confident. Everytime we see some flashback of Marshall's past, he's portrayed as an awkward teenager, and very unpopular with women. Lily seemed to be kind of cool when she was a teenager.
But I agree, she shoud've been the reacher. -

Marshall is a pretty wimpy doofus (as I write this, I'm watching The Chain of Screaming, where he breaks down like a baby because he got screamed at by his boss) while Lily is confident and assertive. There's no way he's more attractive than her - he's soft and flabby (her nickname of Marshmallow is perfect) and has a goofy baby face. They both believe in the existence of the supernatural - they went to Loch Ness for their honeymoon because they both believe in Nessie - so that's a wash. And the fact that he becomes a lawyer and eventually a judge is irrelevant since he was a stoner college kid when they met and had yet to pass the bar when they married (I watched that episode expecting he wouldn't pass). I wouldn't necessarily say he was reaching, but on any scale I'd definitely put him a peg or two below her.
Of course, it's fiction, so it's whatever you want to see. lol -

A friend, seeing some episodes of this show for the first time, thinks the Columbia law student was a reach for Marshall.
The best I could come up with was "Well he got into Wesleyanbut it was undergrad, not the same as an Ivy law school." My friend argued, he seemed a little too dim to excel at Columbia and pass the bar first time through, is all. I think it's a tossup.
As for reacher or not, Lily had her flaws, too. She could be downright evil, and was always calculating. Marshall lacked that; even when he did destructive things it was because he was an idiot, not because he was trying to orchestrate each slice of his life into some grander scheme to benefit only himself. -

I think a lot of it has to do with how you were raised, and location. More of the group seemed to have backgrounds similar to Lily's, ie more urbane as opposed to rural. So by default they'll view that as more desirable. I personally would think that Marshall was the unknowing settler, but my upbringing matches his more than Lily's.

Lily is the reacher.
In the first two seasonsthe episode where she stalks Marshall and that dark haired girl on their first date. Another example, she freaked out when Amanda Peet's character kissed Marshall. And a third exampleLily kept Scooter on her hook for a long time without Marshall's knowledge. Didn't the group explain why people are kept on the hook? Scooter was her safety net. If she's not a reacher then I don't think she's as confident as people think she is. -

Hadn't really thought about it, but yeah when you say it like that, I'd rate Lily as the reacher. Like others have said though, her self confidence to a fault(a huge disgusting one) is probably the reason I didn't really question it. She's also in better shape, so her faults might not be noticeable on first glance while Marshal's qualities wouldn't be either. But yeah people who knew them should've seen how lucky Lily was and how much better Marshal could've done.
