Dudley Mason, let's compare apples to apples, not apples to oranges! A man's full genitalia (pubic hair, penis and scrotum) is equal to a woman's full genitalia (pubic hair, clitoris, and labia). Its NOT difficult to show a woman's meat. Most women nowadays shave their vaginas and their labia is easily visible in many normal positions. Women in the real world, when naked, are often in positions where their labia is visible. A woman can be laying in bed with her legs somewhat apart, can be bent over, could be crawling and viewed from behind, can be squatting down, etc.
Movies like Walk Hard and Bruno showed CLOSE-UP views of the man's penis. We could easily reverse this and show a close-up of a vagina. So don't give me that crap that it would be hard to do. The only reason we don't see female genitalia is because director's take great care to AVOID showing it. This is because of the MPAA's unfair rating policy.
As for a boner, that's graphically sexual. When a man is erect, he is in a PENETRATABLE state. The only equivelant would be showingg a woman in a penetrated state (penetration) or a SPREAD-OPEN VAGINA. How many spread vaginas have you seen in an R-rated movie? None. So there shouldn't be any erect penises either. But flaccid penises have been shown in several R-rated films in close-up detail; thus, vaginas that aren't being spread-open or penetrated should be shown clearly too!

Hardly. Very few women shave their labia and nobody shaves their vagina because that's one of those inside parts of a woman. Unless you're wearing a skimpy bathing suit it's a complete waste of time and leaves very irritating stubble between shaves.

I've never seen a boner in a film.
Fight Club. Tyler Durden splices a 'frame' (actually it's longer than one frame so that the audience can see it) of an erect penis into the film at least twice.

I've seen a cock ejaculate at the camera on film. If you've seen the movie I'm talking about, you'll immediately know what it is.

No My Name Is Pussy Galore, you are WRONG! You do NOT CLEARLY see her vagina. You get a brief flash between her legs , but the actual labia/clitoris CANNOT be seen. Can you describe to me what Sharon Stone's vagina looks like? Can you honestly say you've seen her clitoris? There are several movies (such as Walk Hard,Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Bruno, etc.) which showed very clear, long, lingering, detailed views of the penis. If you've seen Bruno, you know exactly what Sach Baron Cohen's penis and scrotum look like. Not only that, his penis became erect and pointed at the camera. No type of FEMALE nudity like this has ever been seen in a mainstream film that was passed with an R-rating. Learn to compare apples to apples, DUMB-ASS!

I would have to see the movie again but when I saw it the first time I thought I could see some labia in Paul Veerhoven's Black Book in the scene where she is dying her pubic hair. I have not seen this film but so I don't know if this was discussed but is there an exception to media within media-for example in the movie Clerks when Randall flashes a porn mag to the customer I believe that is an extreme close-up that leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination.

Before I say anything else, let me state that I'm a woman and I'm not a prude or a religious person. However, I cannot think of one reason why any movie aside from a porno flick would ever need to show a clitoris or an actual vagina. A clitoris is small, and a camera would have to be up close and pretty damn personal to get a good shot of one. Why would any non-pornographic film need to do this unless maybe it's a documentary about gynecology? And, as others have already mentioned, a vagina is an internal passageway made of muscle (kind of like the intestines), not something that can be seen easily and NOT the same as labia. If you want to see labia on film so badly, there are plenty of movies out there that feature them and full frontal female nudity. I remember seeing Interview with the Vampire when I was a kid and being surprised at the full frontal shot of a naked woman, pubic hair blazing. And, as Maria Bello mentioned in this documentary, it is pretty silly that pubic hair could not be shown in her film when it's been done so many other times.
I think that one of the issues here is that women (at least attractive ones) will ALWAYS be seen as sex objects. And it doesn't matter how "progressive" a man is - if he's straight, he can't help but see a nude woman that way. A man can be naked on screen and most people don't care because a naked man is not seen as inherently sexual, depending on what he's doing. If he's just lounging around naked, that's all there is to it. Replace the man with a naked woman and all that changes. It doesn't matter if she's sitting there reading a book or washing the dishes or baking a cake, people will sexualize the moment because of her nudity. The more attractive she is, the more sexual it becomes. And that is just human nature, I guess. That's why nude scenes in Holocaust films aren't criticized as harshly since the women are always old or emaciated. Small chance for a boner there. I'm not saying it's bad or good, but that is the reason why female nudity is handled the way it is. A male behind is shown on the big screen, and hardly anyone even notices. A woman gets naked on screen and half the men in the audience have to adjust themselves, especially the younger guys. I remember going to see the movie Open Water several years ago in the theater. It was just me and a friend, and then a group of guys in their early twenties was sitting a few rows in front of us. There was a scene when the main female character is lying in bed nude. (There was even a flash of pubic hair. Oh, boy.) A couple of the guys raised their cell phones up to get a shot of the screen, and then they all started cat-calling the screen like she could hear them. I guess if that's the way grown people are going to react to a naked woman in a non-sexual scene, then the movie ratings will always reflect that.

hardly a fair set of examples. adolescent males, being what they are, need only THINK about female nudity to get a stiffy, and what you saw in Open Water was a group of young people feeding of of each other(a very mild example of mob mentality), especially the guy with the camera phone. i doubt he took that picture for "future reference," but rather to elicit a laugh from his buddies.
i'd bet money that the reaction would have been very similar, if not identical, had it been a group of young women and the scene showed a good-looking guy. don't believe me? sit through any flick featuring a shirtless Billy Zane with a group of your BFFs and see for yourself(maybe throw in a few beers. not that Mr. Zane requires beer goggles, but it's quite possible those guys in the theatre weren't totally dry).
as for the top half of your reply, i agree completely. a nude scene with a woman would have to be a lot moredeliberate, i guessto show much more than pubic hair than if it were a naked man.
