    didnt get the idea why dexter had a son in the first place what was the point of that character

      He was a symbol of Dexter trying to live the normal everyman lifetry to perfect the mask he was wearing.
      A man with a family. Someone who, in many respects, had the american dream. Someone who you would last suspect of being a serial killer. Which is what the #1 rule of the code was. Don't get caught. Therefore by having a family you lower people's suspicion.
      The problem is that after
      Rita was killed
      the writers had NO idea what to do with him. He was mentioned when it was convenient for the writers to use him and almost ignored otherwise.

        the writers had NO idea what to do with him.
        Well he certainly was a significant part of the last season (and Dexter's growing extended "family"). However I liked the bitter/sweet conclusion of the show, where Dexter tells Oliver that he reminded him of who he really is. We later find Dexter has successfully disappeared alone.
