So can a dictator. A dictator is a position within a republic. Think Sulla or Caesar. In the case of the former his power only lasted a decade then the senate resolved as normal.

A good dictator beats any other form of government. They can accomplish great things with no interference.
However, succession is the problem. You are likely to end up with a terrible one sooner or laterthen you're screwed.
That's why I would prefer a bad president. At least you're only stuck with that for a few years. -

What a terrible choice. But if you believe in democratic institutions the choice has to be the crappy president, at least the bum will eventually get voted out. And most dictators are not like Cincinnatus and return to their farm when the political emergency is overthey stick around too long, make bad decisions as they get overly comfortable, and set up their relatives or crony bootlickers to succeed them.
