Good question.
I think Rogue One was much better written and had a more solid story that made sense. But, the characters were largely bland, dull and forgettable. The best parts of the movie were throwbacks to the originals; Vader, Tarkin, etc.
TFA had a lazy story that basically re-hashed the original, and the writing was typical JJ Abrams bad. But the characters were good and had chemistry, and I enjoyed watching them.
So I guess Rogue One has the better plot and writing, but TFA had more entertaining characters.
Overall I'd say I preferred Rogue One, though.

The studio actually
sort of
recommended the ending.
It's what the writers wanted to do. But they were doubtful they'd be allowed so they didn't include it in the script.
But then when the studio read it the execs were like "so they all have to die, right?"

I liked them both.
They each had different purpose.
I thought the story in TFA was underwhelming and really just a rehash of ANH, but everything else was great.
RO was a good movie with forgettable characters.
In short they both have + and - which IMO balanced each other out.
