Rings, though I love all 6 films.
Setting and Cinematography: LotR. Middle Earth feels far more lived in than a galaxy where each planet basically has one characteristic (i.e. Sand planet, snow planet).
Characters: Equally tropey, though Gollum stands out as the best character of either series.
Music: Equally perfect.
Story: LotR for sure. Star Wars doesn't even really feel satisfying when it ends because of how terrible the Ewok battle is. Additionally, the first movie feels a little disconnected. -

LOTR. The first two in each trilogy are on par but Return of the King is much better than Return of the Jedi.

hard to saythey're both so differentand both greati love all the films in both franchises.
i grew up with the original Star Wars movies though, so i'm partial to Star Wars

SW is the apoge of style over content.
Even the actors like Ford and Guinness couldn't stand the dialouges.
