I tried watching it, not only was it not funny but it constantly brought up race issues and was very uncomfortable to watch.
It got cancelled because nobody watched it and the characters weren’t remotely interesting.
Also the mother was obese which made her a terrible role model for children. -

It ran two seasons, so obviously people watched it.
"I didn't find it funny" would be a better, more appropriate way to get your point across.
So you didn't like it… could be you're a bit intolerant of the subject matter. I'm just basing that on your op.
The fact the mother was overweight should not be a big deal with you… it's just part of the story… it's not something to be triggered over.

Any show that can’t make it to season 3 is a huge failure. It only got a 2nd season because it checked the woke boxes, not because it was anything groundbreaking.
The mother being overweight was very distracting to me, but what ultimately killed the show was the constant emphasis on race. People wanted to laugh and have a good time, instead we got unfunny jokes and episodes that were cringy and uncomfortable to watch. -

A "huge failure" would be a show that is cancelled after 3-5 episodes. Two seasons isn't so bad.
I can't remember for sure, but I think production had to shut down because of COVID and they decided not to continue because by the time they could resume production, the actor who played Dean was going to be much older… too old to look right for the next season.
I'll check the IMDb page on the show and report back.

From what I could find, it was cancelled due to low ratings and nothing re: the pandemic affecting ABC's decision. In one part of what I read, the writers' strike was mentioned, but not whether it affected the quality of the production.
I wish it could've lasted longer…it was well done and much better than you have painted it, imo.
