Any show that canโt make it to season 3 is a huge failure. It only got a 2nd season because it checked the woke boxes, not because it was anything groundbreaking.
The mother being overweight was very distracting to me, but what ultimately killed the show was the constant emphasis on race. People wanted to laugh and have a good time, instead we got unfunny jokes and episodes that were cringy and uncomfortable to watch. -

A "huge failure" would be a show that is cancelled after 3-5 episodes. Two seasons isn't so bad.
I can't remember for sure, but I think production had to shut down because of COVID and they decided not to continue because by the time they could resume production, the actor who played Dean was going to be much olderโฆ too old to look right for the next season.
I'll check the IMDb page on the show and report back.
Imo, the show didn't overemphasize race issues at all.

From what I could find, it was cancelled due to low ratings and nothing re: the pandemic affecting ABC's decision. In one part of what I read, the writers' strike was mentioned, but not whether it affected the quality of the production.
I wish it could've lasted longerโฆit was well done and much better than you have painted it, imo.
