Folks, Conan wasnt forced off The Tonight Show as so many blind and short-sighted fools seem to believe. He was offered the chance to keep his job even though he failed. How many people get that offer? He failed but the network still wanted to keep him as the host. He was given an opportunity and he passed on it. With life being so competitive, when youre given an opportunity like that, you take it. Conan admitted he walked away from The Tonight Show. Unlike what he seems to believe, moving it to 12:05 wouldnt have killed the franchise. Jay probably would have done his show for five years, and Conan and The Tonight Show would move back to 11:35.
Conan was given an opportunity to keep his job that he was failing at miserably, and he walked. THEN Jay was offered the job back that he loved. Who would have said no to that? Obviously, Jay loves it more than Conan, otherwise Conan would have stayed. Conans the selfish baby in all this, and people who side with him are either Cuckoo Cocos or just plain stupid.
This is all about Conan's ego getting in the way of rational thiking. He'll regret this decision, and Jay will have The Tonight Show at #1. -

Sorry but the show that starts at 11:35 is The Tonight show, not the show after that, regardless of what NBC tries to call the two shows.
Leno will not only go down in television history for his disastrous 10pm show failure that destroyed NBC primetime ratings, NBC affiliate late local news ratings, and Conan's Tonight Show ratings, he will also be forever remembered for ruining The Tonight show (twice!) with his lame robotic personality and comedy bits that he mostly steals from other shows and usually ruins with his Lamo-Leno touch. -

Sometimes I wonder if, 20 or maybe even 10 years from now, anyone will care that Leno was the "King of Late Night." It's like many actors/actresses who were popular in their time, but fade into insignficance when evaluated in the present.

No one will probably care in 20 years. But that's pretty much entertainment as a whole. People remember Johnny Carson as a legend (and deservedly so), but he lasted for 30 years and he also wasn't competing against "The Late Show," "Jimmy Kimmel Live," the Colbert/Stewart combo, "Lopez Tonight," etc. There wasn't the competition so he truly was the King of Late Night.
But in another 15 years or so, will people care that shows like "Friends" and "Frasier" were so huge? They'll remember them in TV history and how they were successful, but people won't be hanging on itprobably the same as Leno. And people won't be hanging onto Leno, Letterman or any of these guys probably. -

Well, with DVDs available now, who knows..
People are certainly still hanging onto The Twilight Zone (sorry, I have a bias for Rod Serling and TZ). The TZ marathons bring in over 1 million viewers. Not bad for a show over 50 years old.. -

You Coco morons still don't get it. Conan is NOT funny!! He lost MILLIONS of viewers one that red haired freak took over for Leno.
Leno's monologue is universally recognized as the best in late night while Conan does brainless stuff like "Twitter Tracker".
Jay is the King of late night where he belongs where Conan is out of a job where he belongs. -

First, where do you get off calling me a moron? I don't call you names.
Second, I never said I was an O'Brien or Letterman fan. It is possible to hate Leno without being a fan of other late-night hosts, you know.
Third, Leno is NOT universally recognized as having the best monologue in late night. Many people consider his jokes to be obvious and "safe," which is probably why he led in the ratings. He appeals to "Middle America," who most likely do not care that he is a backstabbing weasel, so congratulations, Leno will most likely be #1 again when he returns. -

That's because Conan forced him out back in 2004, Jay NEVER wanted to leave. Conan's reps went to NBC in 2004 and said listen were getting offers from other networks and if you want to keep Conan you need to give him the Tonight Show in 2009. I'm no Conan hater either, I watch both the Jay Leno Show and the Tonight Show everyday when it was on. If you want to blame someone blame NBC not Jay Leno.

Well, um, this is kind of my point- if he was being forced out why did he stick around for YEARS and then go along with this stupid primetime idea??? If someone treats you badly, you WALK. Leno's response to everything seems to be: I did it because NBC executives asked me to. Leno is the ultimate corporate puppet.
It's time you Leno fans held him to some responsibility and stopped laying it off on other people, as Leno seems intent on doing. It's also time you understood that other people have a right to their opinions. -

Leno has already said a few times already that each time he was relieved of a show he requested to be relieved of his contract. Like with the Jay Leno Show the affiliates weren't happy so they said OK you gotta get something else on at 10pm. So Jay Leno was like OK can you relieve me of my contract now? NBC says NO we want to keep you. At the end of the day if you want to blame someone, blame NBC not Leno. Again why does Leno have to give in to every single whim of Conan? Why should he have to sacrifice his own happiness to please Conan?
I'm no Conan hater either, I watched both shows everyday. -

Conan didn't force Leno out, hell, NBC didn't even force Leno out. NBC didn't want Conan going anywhere, so they went to Leno and told him they wanted to give Conan "The Tonight Show" to keep him around. Leno could have said no. He could have said f^ck you, my shows number one, and if you want me to go then let me go and do what I do for someone that wants mebut he didn't, he rolled over and said ok, and went along with what NBC wanted.

splice1234:
Jay's contract had run out. NBC decided not to renew it. Jay wasn't given a choice in the situation. He never could have said "no." You're very misinformed
No splice1234, you're the misinformed one, in fact you're so misinformed it's funnyonly because you're telling me how misinformed I am. For one thing NBC
did
renew Leno's contract, it's why, you know, he's still on NBC. As for the other thing, well, Leno's contract wasn't up at that time (2004), Conan's was. Leno's wasn't going to be up until 2009, so Leno could have said no, I'm not going to walk away. Now at that point NBC could have forced Leno out, or maybe Conan would have went to ABC or somethingwho knows? But that didn't happen because Leno said he would step down back in 2004, which made way for NBC to make a new deal with Conan to stay and get The Tonight Show.
