Now, a source has claimed the 28-year-old – who was shot dead by police – had a strained relationship with religious parents Norma, 61, and Ronald, 64, after coming out as gay and transgender.

There are a few parties who don't want his journal released, most notably the school itself. Considering there are likely times he wrote about sexual abuse at that school/based on suggestion so far, potentially by the staff, I can assume their motive. They officially claim they fear releasing it would inspire copycats.
Nothing to do with preserving some political narrative, though I do realize that's a convenient way to spin it in right-wing media to suit their own right-wing narrative/propaganda -
