Is American football even a real game?

Exactly! Rugby is a genuinely high-risk game. Rugby-players laugh at American body-armour and shoulder pads. Almost the last person you want to get into a bar fight with is a rugby player. If he's SAS and plays rugby you should meekly let him insult your mother and buy him another round.
American football is said to have developed from rugby. British colonists from Canada are said to have brought rugby to the Americans. At that time the two were not as differentiated as now.
The origin of rugby in England goes back long into the 19th century and even earlier. In 1800's formalities were introduced to football rules in the seven major public schools of England.Handling the ball was permitted in football in the early 1800's when players were allowed to take a mark and then a free kick. The Rugby Football Union had been formed in 1871 by representatives of 21 clubs - all of which were located in southern England and most were within London. By the early 1890's rugby was widespread and well over half the RFU's clubs were in northern England. The working classes of the north of England and South Wales were particularly taken with rugby over football (soccer). -

Canada is exposed to American media. So I would venture to say Canadians follow American football as much as we do, probably more than they do what we call "soccer" or
futbol

But Canadians do play American football at the league level. And they have even participated in American leagues. The American influence in Canada is obviously much greater than in Europe. You may have a point about Quebec, but not the rest of Anglicized Canada.

I thought you were talking about watching football and keeping up with the game. Anyway, better check with Corwin. I can't imagine Canadians being dumb enough to pay any attention to any American sport (except boxing and basketball, which are dominated by black guys).

Guys, to put this to bed:
- We follow the NFL. Lots of people also follow the World Cup
- Those of us who live in a city with a CFL team will walk down the street to catch the occasional game with friends.
- For all my life kids play soccer, not as many adults do. It's been the 'next big thing' that's never happened for about 40 years, like for you.

Yippee! My faith in Canadians has been vindicated. Though you do have a game that involves sweeping the area in front of a slowly sliding thingie. Looks quite retarded.
I'm not sure why you think Corwin vindicated your position.
He said that Canadians follow the NFL and "also" the World Cup. There is also a Canadian Football League which plays American football.
As I said, Canadians are impacted by American media and culture the same or more than they are by the Europeans. The exception might be the French in Quebec.
Dude, talk to an American and a Canadian and you can barely tell them apart by accent or behavior. Canadians are more like Americans than the British.

And that's like the U.S. American kids play soccer. Adults watch American football.
And notice Corwin called it "soccer" like Americans do, not "football" like you do.
