The article was talking about social distancing (as enforced by mandatory lockdowns), not masks. Social distancing is 100% the most effective way to flatten a pandemic. We have to wear masks because people won't stay home. We have to be locked down because people won't social distance when they go out to frolic.

Earlier this year, the Beijing Research Centre for Preventive Medicine found that if people wear face masks at home before they develop symptoms, it prevents transmission 79 per cent of the time. -

What does death rates have to do with masks? If you're studying the effectiveness of masks I'd think case rates would be what we'd want to look at.

Behaving responsibly has nothing to do with being afraid. I'm not afraid of alcohol or of cars and yet I still won't drive after having a few drinks. The understanding that refusing to wear a mask could result in other people getting sick and/or dying a terrible, lonely death should be enough of a deterrent. I'm not terrified. I'm not even remotely worried, even. I'm young and healthy. COVID likely won't cause me any major health issues, unless I'm one of the unlucky few who catches long COVID.
Other people aren't so lucky, however, and you never know who's immunocompromised grandmother is out buying milk for the first time that month. Your stance is completely and utterly selfish. Be a plague rat within the confines of your own home.
