Truman rejected this (he wanted unconditional surrender). In the event, the Emperor was not tried, and lived out his life peacefully. So why did Truman decide on the bomb? Modern historians argue that he wanted to scare the Russians. Killing off thousands of Japanese civilians was in order to kick-start the Cold War.
After the bomb was dropped, America realized they had a PR problem, and they decided to spin it i the direction of "we did it to save countless American lives." It was the kind of crap we nowadays expect from Republican hoodlums. -

As Erica pointed out, the moron Trump pulled out of negotiations with Iran that would have effectively blocked Iran's nuclear capabilities being deployed.
