I agree with the OP, and no, he does not remind me of anyone, except perhaps a little bit of the protagonist in 'The Thing' who played his role there perfectly and was very likeable.
I also like the character and how he looks. I only do not like how poorly and unbelievably the actor acts, as already explained above:

I did not notice any worse actors being protagonists in the show than him. -

He is supposed to be slightly stupid and annoying - a "bro" type. We see more depth to him when he tells the girl about his parents.
But when the sht started getting real with that whole haunted mansion thing, he portrayed genuine fear and vulnerability beautifully.
Personally I would suggest that you re-watch the episode. -

How can you watch his over the top reaction when he sees Peters, and think this is believable?
His reaction is totaly fake and that put me off immediatelly. His acting in this particular scene was so very unnatural and unbelievable - all this prolonged uuhhs and ohhs and weird gesticulation. That was just bad acting. -

I thought his performance was phenomenal and loved the character. I'm around many backpackers and they tend to be very similar to this guy.
