8.1 really?

Not sure how anyone can fail to appreciate one of the better mainstream films of the year. That the protagonist is a whip-smart, courageous, loving mother is clearly off-putting to some. I was never bored for a second and the film makes perfect sense if you pay attention and appreciate the artful play with time and chronology. One of the best adapted screenplays of the year.

No one cares about this. Sci Fi fans have had tons of strong female protagonists.. in fact.. it was really the first genre to have them.. Ripley and Sarah Connor for example.
This movie took an amazing concept (that has been done before) and failed to tell an interesting story with it. -

Yes, because fiction didn't exist until 1979. Are you kidding?
This movie took an amazing concept (that has been done before) and failed to tell an interesting story with it.
I completely disagree. I think it told a more interesting story than most sci-fi films we've been getting. It's not a bang bang kill em all kind of movie, and that's perfectly fine. Sci-fi doesn't have to become an action movie.

She is, actually. "Yet" is a concept derived from how we perceive time. Once she truly begins to understand their language, "now" has significantly less meaning to her. Her mind essentially becomes like Dr. Manhattan.
She's courageous and loving exactly because she chooses the same path, knowing the pain and heartache it will lead to.

There are other ways to make Sci fi movies. We as a society are so bombarded with action action action. This one makes us slow down and appreciate a story. It was suspenseful if you truly paid attention. I loved it. Thought it was a lovely change of pace beyond the dozens of remakes and sequels, etc.

This, right here. People seem to be obsessed with the idea of action sci-fi being the only kind of sci-fi there is. Not the case.

If Interstellar(2014) can get 8.6, this may get 8.1 or more easily. Because they are similar at core but this one did not irritate me much like Interstellar even I generally do not like any inconsistent, mind-bending, illogical by nature, time travel thingies.
Well, what were you really expecting? You know, they couldnt use huge nukes on aliens because they landed, right ? -
NightFeather — 9 years ago(February 11, 2017 03:46 AM)
You really think the government wouldn't nuke us to stop a percived threat? Lol civilians are nothing more than collateral damage. They wouldn't even hesitate. They would justify it by saying "What's a few thousand, hundred thousand, million compared to saving hundred million or a billion?" I don't think you truly understand how expendable we are to our own countries.

You really think detonating nuclear warheads in the US and elsewhere is a smart idea? Especially when we have no idea if it would even have an effect? Frankly, you're stupid if you think world governments would be so stupid to start a war with an alien race without even attempting to make contact.
How the government justified it would be irrelevant. We'd be wiped out regardless of their reasoning. I don't think you truly understand the technological gap between humans and a species capable of bridging the gap between stars.

This is the government we are talking about, smart ideas are out of the question. Did you even watch the movie? If you did, did you miss the part where China, Russia, Iran and even America were preparing to attack the creatures? That was all over a simple missunderstanding. If conventional didn't work, nuclear would follow.

well said..
there are lots of things that I can explain why this movie sucks. But I will behave as the romantic movie fans did, and say, "if you liked it, you will not get it even if I explain"
But I just wanna point out this. why the f.ck extraterrestrials would care for world peace? why would they give a sh.t?
damn. lamest movie ever. 2/10 at most. -

@mr-danny, @salt101..
you mention that aliens will need our help after 3000 years right. So they found a way to make us work together.. which will be benefitial for them at far future..
I don't buy that. movie sucks at being a good sci-fi and tries to be something valuable at philosophical side as the plot.. let me explain 2 dilemmas that conflicts with that approach..- it looks like they are way ahead of us at science and communication.. they are well much aware of how universe works etc. And they decided to manipulate us (even in a good way) for a greater good.. that is the first dilemma.. if they really have good intentions for every kind of living beings around and with a friendly and peaceful universe, why the beep they just don't explain it us that way, being more decent and honest. what? cause humans will not give a beep if they acted that way? than I don't f.cking trust any kind of being who treats me like an as.hole. even the relation of their attitude with god at holy books, which irritates me and make me wonder about their decency.
- if their communication lets them to see the future and their science lets them to dissolve like moist at mid air, they should have better communication skills other than making us understand their weird language. (which is lack of proves and reasons to make the audience believe, that we learn their language and communicate with them in a couple of weeks) if they are superior, they should act like one. be more explanatory and make sense..
and worst of all, those beings looks like octopus and squids mated. really? ok I don't expect to see something humane but not something like from earth too.. specially not something like those idiotic creatures.

Nobody gives a beep if you buy it or not, that's what the movie gives us whether you like it or not.- That's a false dilemma. They didn't manipulate us for the greater good. I don't think you understood the nature of time in the movie. You're looking at time as a linear progression of cause and effect. But the aliens do not perceive time this way. Everything that has happened, is happening or will happen, already has. Think Terminator 1 rules.
And your question as to why they don't explain that to us, they beep did. But you have to break down the linguistic barriers first, since their language is COMPLETELY alien to us.
even the relation of their attitude with god at holy books, which irritates me and make me wonder about their decency.
What the beep are you talking about? - Again, you failed to understand the film. They don't "see the future." The future exists. Their language affects how they PERCEIVE time. It doesn't allow them the ability to time travel. It only allows them to be aware of events that have yet to happen from the specific time frame of "now."
Their communication skills aren't the problem. Ours is. Their language is complex where ours is simple. Not to mention, the point was to help humanity change our perception of time and move beyond our insular views of borders.
if they are superior, they should act like one. be more explanatory and make sense..
Do you truly not understand "Alien language"? They make perfect sense, their language is just incredibly complex. We don't understand it because we have no frame of reference.
and worst of all, those beings looks like octopus and squids mated. really? ok I don't expect to see something humane but not something like from earth too.. specially not something like those idiotic creatures.
The beep are you talking about? They clearly had bones in their apendages, unlike squids and octopods. Which are invertebrates. This is a seriously stupid criticism. "The aliens didn't look alien enough for me."
From a guy who rated Heroes a 9 but Life of Pi a 1, it's incredibly had to take you seriously. Especially when you get facts completely wrong.

That is not an answer to what I ask. You say we are unable to understand their reasons and why they are doing this, unless we understand their language cause we have nothing to to take as a reference right? ok. But you are being a demagogue. Those still can't be an excuse for them, like behaving as beep They could have said, "you must learn our language" and it is much more easy for them to speak our language for that explanation, instead of making us learn theirs which we made in a couple of weeks at movie, also which is another idiotic thing to be taken as a fact. I don't like to have assumptions at sci-fi movies. Maybe you like, and that is you. But respect my expectations as a different person dear.
even the relation of their attitude with god at holy books, which irritates me and make me wonder about their decency.

I don't know you are a believer or not, but the same attitude we can see at holy books, about how god treats humans.
Even it doesn't make any sense that god's sayings and explanations, we must accept and move along. Cause it is god. He should know better right? I hate that submissive like behaviour. It is an insult to my intelligence. So yes, they behave like they are superior than us. But not acting like that. It creates a story makes me having difficulties to relate with. Maybe you can, but that is you. Not me.
I never claimed that they are making time travels etc. If you are making a movie, that an unknown not-seen language will make you to foresee the future events, than you have to explain exactly how it works. An answer like "it is a very different language you know, when you learn it, you will have a totally different perception" hmm that doesn't convince me. Maybe you, but not me.
It is like I am telling you, that I am 784 years old, it is possible because I made a special potion with the herbs that makes my lifetime centuries longer and never aged. Than you ask ok how, what herbs are they, how they work? And I say, your science is not enough to understand it, cause you are a low-life. drink it and live centuries more. If you were me you would say, oh great, I will drink it. But I'd say, beep off dear, find someone else to mock with. But that's me, not you. You drink it. bon-a-petite.
and worst of all, those beings looks like octopus and squids mated. really? ok I don't expect to see something humane but not something like from earth too.. specially not something like those idiotic creatures.

So you add bones to a squid or octopus, and they are aliens. lemme laugh on this a minute. ehhehm. ehm.
At a sci-fi movie, if I can relate the designed aliens to any being from earth, that makes the production design of the movie a little lack of creativity. Look at Alien series, look at Predator, look at even Blob. They are much more convincing, even many of them don't have superior intelligence and totally different languages. I would be much more happier even if I saw steam like non-visible creatures instead of those creatures. Don't defend that octopus like things with their bones and being or not being invertebrates. that doesn't make any sense. But as I said. That is you.. You buy that. but respect if I don't.
And of course I would give heroes 9, first version of them has all criterias that a good plot need to have. It was fun to watch as tv series. And it didn't promised anything that I didn't see. It has an integrity which matters to me a lot. Life of Pi deserved 1 star cause it was way overrated. Actually it may get a 5 maybe, but after I see it was scored
