A movie carries a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 58 reviews, and the atmosphere on its IMDb board is still overwhelmingly negative.
What is it about this website in particular that attracts so much cynicism?

The difference between these folks on IMDb and the reviewers is that the reviewers are honest with themselves. They recognize this movie isn't perfect and in most cases do point out the perceived flaws/weaknesses but also acknowledge that in the grand scheme of things the movie itself is one of the finest sci-fi movies in a while. Comparisons to Close Encounters, Contact, Interstellar are frequent in the reviews. It's now up to 60 reviews and still at 100%. I'll gladly open my wallet and fork over my hard earned dollar based on what the reviewers are writing over a handful of cynics (not to mention the blatant trolling) that take pride in tearing apart good cinema.
P.S. If anyone thinks I'm a fanboy, I'll gladly write up my own honest critique this coming weekend, but then again if it's as good as some folks are saying, I might be too busy rewatching this movie a few times over. -

Very well stated, and my sentiments exactly. While it's impossible to make everybody happy, I respect the criticisms when people can put the effort to write their comments objectively.
It's insane the amount of hate I have seen trolling around this film and that's mostly with people who haven't even seen it yet. You would think by joining such a forum like IMDB it would be an indication of having a more serious interest in the hobby. -

My theory is that it's because of the lack of active moderation on these forums. Sure, if a comment gets enough reports it will get deleted - most likely by an algorithm and not an actual person. But at any other film forum - reddit, slashfilm, birth movies death, etc. - anyone who spouted outlandish ideas about critics being bribed, and accusing other posters of being studio shills, and just being a deliberate contrarian in general would promptly get them downvoted to oblivion, if not banned outright.

I'm not suprised, it's a film that requires the use of a brain.
Most people want plot and meaning rubber stamped on their forehead. I don't know what happened = bad movie unfortunately.
I enjoyed it regardless, a repeat viewing is in order. -

Ain't that the truth! I cracked up when I saw the post asking what the plot twist was. Can you believe that? Why in the world would someone even want to know such a major spoiler before deciding to see it or not? Some people on here are "interesting" - lol.

Right, because the opinion of ten or twenty people who have that opinion and started negative threads here outweighs the 3100 who have given it an 8.5 so far and the 153 critics whose average 8.5 score has it as the second best film of the year.

Honesty does not make up for incompetence.
Any profile which has given votes that are mostly 1/10 or 2/10 and 9/10 or 10/10 should have all their reviews invalidated.
It genuinely means you are incapable of thinking objectively. -

Nothing at all wrong with IMDB.
This movie will end up with more than 100,000 IMDB votes. It's no surprise that there will be twenty or thirty people who disliked it and feel compelled to start threads which consist of nothing more than "this sucked."
Now, an honest thread that attempts to identify flaws and weaknesses is always interesting and valuable. Rare as hell, though.
These boards would benefit hugely from upvote / downvote buttons.

The comments/message board of any website is as close as you can get to the 7th circle of hell as you can get
You dont need a grain of salt to navigate the waters more like a block of it .sorry for the mixed metaphors -

Ya. Those 58 people, and all of RT, know what people should and shouldn't like. Their opinion is supreme and everyone should follow it.

Look, I post on a lot of film boards. On any other board, when a film carries that much positive buzz prior to release the general consensus among the posters is excitement and optimism. Whether or not individual posters enjoy the film after its release is another story.
On IMDb though, a film receives universal acclaim and the general attitude is: "There's NO way it's THAT good! The critics are taking bribes again!" and anyone who HAS seen the film prior to release is a "shill" for the studio.
Having seen the film last night, it's very good but has its problems. I definitely see why it's gotten so much praise, but ultimately I gave it an 8/10 rating; lower than the RT average rating, but would still rank as a positive review for the "Tomato-meter".

Something else you only seem to see on this website; illiterate gibberish. Didn't IMDb used to have active moderators once upon a time?
