Roof collapses from lack of electricity?

This is one of the ways that the plot is a bit quirky. It's odd that the man of the house has enough handy man smarts to McGuyver his chainsaw with a shoestring to run the alternator on his car and charge a dead battery, and to be in the process of installing a solar power system, yet he doesn't have sense enough to shingle the roof first. And also absent minded enough to manage to kill himself with the same chainsaw he failed to do routine maintenance on. By that time he had already been spooked by the guy with the shotgun and had some inkling how serious the situation they were all in. One would think he'd also understand how important it was to maintain a vital tool like that chain sawand to avoid being injured without easy access to medical care

But, if he had fixed the roof, and completed the solar install, the girls would have just been clinging to the house that much longer, listening to their music collections, watching BlueRays, and home movies, and not coping with the collapse of modern civilization, and relearning how to live off the land again, thanks to a handy selection of how-to manuals and books about the local fauna they had lying around.
I think we're meant to ponder the fragility of our convenience filled modern world full of techno magic, and how me way suffer at the loss of it. And how some of us might be all the better off for the loss of it, in some ways. These two sisters would likely have never known the closeness of the bond they forged struggling to survive together if life had continued normally. They were both mostly absorbed in their life ambitions, perhaps to help cope with the loss of their mother. -

Agreed with you, the building collapsing was a bit too much in such a short time span.
I've seen houses were I live that has HUGE holes in their rooftops (abandoned) and they are still pretty much intact, there must the excessive rain that got it yet it was just a little bit too fast.
And the father not checking the chainsaw, sorry but that's just wrong, NO man that is handy with tools with ever manage a chainsaw without triple-checking before.
He died because the script needed that, period.
Yet, even with this minor problem, I can see the point of the movie, take a look at the weak sister, trying to dance and avoid the current situation, it was the weak of the two, very fragile human being in the "advanced" civilization, yet, after she has the baby, she get strongminded and full of willpower, it's one of the strongest points of the movie and the thing that liked me the most.

The roof purposefully had square holes in it. Their father was expecting a shipment of solar panels, and probably had already prepared the roof for installation. Unfortunately the apocalypse came, and those preparations became a liability. I'm certain their dad would have repaired the roof with proper sheeting and cedar shakes had he not been an idiot with a chainsaw.

No, but lack of maintenance will, especially if said house was also an ongoing project with previous structural damage.

They were installing solar which requires removing shingling
The roof was tarped from the beginning
Right when they showed the "15 months" note they showed a tree that had fallen on the roof.
Then they showed water streaming in through the ceiling.
And yet, the collapse of the roof surprises you? People either need to put down their phones and watch the movie or just accept the fact they're missing a lot.

With no power, a lot of things in the world will go boom and send bad stuff into the air then that rains back down

When it's in the middle of a retrofit to begin with so that water leaks in in a region where rains constantly and then a tree falls on it. Yeah, I have no problem believing this.
