The roof purposefully had square holes in it. Their father was expecting a shipment of solar panels, and probably had already prepared the roof for installation. Unfortunately the apocalypse came, and those preparations became a liability. I'm certain their dad would have repaired the roof with proper sheeting and cedar shakes had he not been an idiot with a chainsaw.

Thanks, Stylin291. You're right, of course; the solar panels were not just expected, but overdue, I think? Anyway, this explains the roof issues to my satisfaction!

I thought she was referring to their home and this was a 'cottage' they were staying at no? Could be wrong as they went back to itbut I thought he said to Stan they were going home.

Thanks for the explanation/reminders. The roof collapse and mold problem had been bugging me, but make sense now.
Yeah, he builds/buys a "smart" house ("Lights on") but ignores the roof issues. smh

The mention early on that the cabin needs repair so this complaint is not valid. Next!

No, but lack of maintenance will, especially if said house was also an ongoing project with previous structural damage.

They were installing solar which requires removing shingling
The roof was tarped from the beginning
Right when they showed the "15 months" note they showed a tree that had fallen on the roof.
Then they showed water streaming in through the ceiling.
And yet, the collapse of the roof surprises you? People either need to put down their phones and watch the movie or just accept the fact they're missing a lot.

When it's in the middle of a retrofit to begin with so that water leaks in in a region where rains constantly and then a tree falls on it. Yeah, I have no problem believing this.

I also found the roof collapse a little unconvincing.

I've known of and sneaked into abandoned houses with leaky roofs that have literally gone years without the roof falling in. Weak plot point only made worse by the power being out for years.

I didn't know anything about this movie. Thought it was a lesbian love story in an apocalypse or something. Wasn't disappointed though.

I thought the roof was at risk of collapse from one of the first scenes. It was shown to be covered with moss. Only a matter of time at that point.
