Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Ash vs Evil Dead

    Bdave101 — 9 years ago(November 06, 2016 04:46 PM)

I grew up with Evil Dead and these characters and actors. So, they have a special place in my heart for them. I have actually kept up with Ellen's life over the years.
THIS time around she got to play a lot more of the "possessed Cheryl". In The Evil Dead many of her possessed scenes were played by Fake Shemps in heavy 1980's make up and home made prosthetics. I believe all the stand ins (Fake Shemps) were male in her case.
This time around with make up and state of the art prosthetics that allowed better facial expressions and actual vision(original white contact lenses in 1981 made the actors 100% blind), Sandweiss had the chance to do what she never did in 1981, which was really shine in the demon scenes. She did not disappoint. Obviously, they used stunt doubles a few times for the most extreme physical shots. But otherwise, it was all her.
What also made it great was that the writers did not miss a single meme or trope from the first movie. You can never go wrong paying homage to well loved memes, especially if it is done well and ALSO if the original artist is doing the the new scenes all these many years later.
I loved how the writers brought up the whole tree rape thing which was VERY taboo at the time. Ellen for years was pretty embarrassed about that scene. Now, finally she has accepted it and OWNS that legacy. It was great to see her make fun of that scene in this appearance ALL these years later. 34 or 35 years later?? How many? "I am going to make like a tree and frak you!!!" Bwahahaha! I was in stitches. I hope she got a kick out of saying that line.
God Bless the writers, make up artist and Ellen Sandweiss. Realize she still performed in some fairly physical scenes that would tax younger actors. She was in tip top shape for being close to 60 years old. Don't you think? A lot of NOSE, mind you. But she always had that. Wide angle lenses are not exactly her friend if you know what I mean. But if she was not comfortable with her features, she would have changed them by now. Right?
They gave her more screen time than I thought they would which worked out well for everyone. I hope that she and the crew had a blast doing this episode. It looked like she was totally in to the journey. Good for her. Good for US!
I had to stop and pause half way through her decapitation to come here and post. I was SO impressed and pleased.
Was any one NOT happy with her scenes? Why?
I feel SO nostalgic I need to go and we watch ALL her scenes in this episode.
    Oh, dont forget these!!!:

      I loved it.
The scene with her and Ted in the room was the feel I always wanted out of this series.
Evil Dead is not 'just' Ash, to tell you the truth.
She was the main character for the first half.
I love Ash of course, but this just BLEW UP the Universe to me on a GRAND scale having her in this. I'll accept this as his real backstory now when watching the original. If Ash vs Evil Dead can keep up this quality then it will be a great rest of the season.

Cheryl my favorite character from the Bruce EVIL DEAD films (Mia is my fave from the remake). what happened to her in the original film (tree rape, etc) was so brutal, heartbreaking and (i hope i don't sound like a weirdo. i DO NOT think rape is ok) cool. i also felt bad for Cheryl (in the original) since she was the 5th wheel with no date/lover with her on the trip. i instantly felt invested in the character. seeing her in tonight's episode was a HUGE treat. everything from her the make up fx, to Ellen's acting to the crazy stunt work (involving Cheryl) was perfect IMO and 100% felt like it could have been deleted/never before seen scenes from the original ED.

I've always felt that through the first half of the film, Cheryl was far more the main character than Ashley was.

I reallllly liked AvED Season 1, but i am LOVING AvED Season 2. The writing is top notch and manages even with super-fast 30m episodes, to hit us with some great story progression AND references to cannon. Bringing back his sister, played by the same actress, is a brilliant example of this. It allows for the new story to expand but also reference Ash's earlier adventures. Same goes for the character of the Delta 88 this season. So much greatness!!!

I loved her cameo! I'm totally glad they didn't have to recast someone else to play her, otherwise I probably wouldn't have liked it as much.
Also, she doesn't seem to have aged much.

She has a little. But only or 7 years ago she looked VERY young still. I have kept up with her looks and comments over the years. Cool lady. Her nose does not like the Wide Angle lens too well. Oh well. Cool lady. I always found her attractive, shnoz and all.
