Almost nothing happens in the episode, TBH
But it's great having him in the insane asylum.
It was like another movie, or natural progression of the Ash type character in a different bizarre scenario.

Ash is finally "insane", like your theory.
It doesn't resolve itself at all. Kelly doesn't fight the puppet either, so I guess that happens in a later episode.

The episode will be more impactful when watching the series all together in marothon mode.
It's pretty much our only pure character development episode. No deadites. No big action. etc

Well, yes, but the whole concept of the episode is that it takes place in Ash's mind as Baal tries to manipulate him. Ash
succumbs to Baal's will at the end, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's gone insane

It was pretty obvious to me Ash looked out the window, saw the gang arrive, realized/confirmed the asylum was an an illusion, and decided to simply play along until he could turn the tables.

Agree, one of the best episodes of the franchise. Funny when it needs to be but the overall tone was very serious, perhaps the first truly serious thing in the entire saga.
Even Bruce showed a performance like I have never seen before, believable and real not B acting by any stretch.
I think the way he played it is one of the most jarring thing because it feels real and natural.
Also plays of the old time speculation about whether any of its real.
