It's interesting how most of the answers aren't really answers. "carry a gun." um, in this situation he didn't have a gun. "speed up, run away." even if that worked, then he's not in the situation that the question is asking about.
I was thinking about it during the film and i think the best/only thing might have been to pull a rick grimes (the walking dead) and chomped down on ray's carotid artery. seeing someone do that and all the blood might have been enough to make lou and turk think twice and take off. and there was the opportunity when ray was all up in tony's face. -

The whole highway scene was frigging stupid. There were so many things that could've been averted. The daughter needed to get slapped for taunting the 3 guys in the first place by showing them the finger (albeit I admit she was just the catalyst). Jake's character could've also not been a frigging oaf. They were clearly ahead of the other guys when he was driving (before they were thrown off the road), he should've sped up and tried to get away. He could've tried to wrestle off the lug wrench from one of the guys and hit the guy hard enough to knock him out and try to do the same with the other two. The two women could've acted faster when they saw the cop car by running to the middle of the road (chances of getting hit was there but could've taken the risk considering they had nothing to lose right then). Then there was that scene when two of the guys were trying to carry the mother and the daughter the remaining guy was trying to stop Jake's character from reaching them, the wrench was lying there right on the floor. He could've just picked it him and hit the guy who was stopping him and went after the other two but no he just stayed there standing saying "Laura Laura". His character was just slow and stupid, he acted like someone who was high on drugs. I facepalmed through the entire scene because it was full of stupid.
I understand his character was supposed to symbolises weakness but it was a painful scene (actually the whole novel portion was a pain to watch due to Tony).

He could have driven on his flat tire. He could have told his family to take off running down the road the other direction. There's not much he could have done. But it's an extremely implausible situation that was constructed to be emotionally manipulative. Why would the predators do this when anyone could drive by, including police? Are they gonna kidnap women like that and assault the guy and just hope that no one is gonna drive by? I know, it's the desert in West Texas where there are not a lot of cars. But it's not Mad Max.

Unfortunately people do this all the time. They actually found, in a nearby town, a woman alive in a metal shipping crate who had been there for 3 months. The man who kidnapped her shot her fiance in front of her and turned out to have killed multiple people over the course of a decade. An actual serial killer in my town. 7 bodies found so far. In my city of Charleston, a man named Dylan Roof came into a church and shot 9 people. He did it in public, leaving others alive on purpose to tell the story and even wrote a manifesto & a note in his cell after being captured about he wasn't sorry. People are sick. Happens all the time. Sociopaths don't care about consequences.

Yeah but I'm just talking about the scenario of having your family abducted from the highway. It depends on no one driving by and no cell service. There's no way the abductors knew that no one was gonna be driving by for the next ten minutes.

tony taking on those three pyschos at the roadside is a bit much to ask. however, when he was driving the car down the dirt road he could have buckled up and rammed the car into a wall at 30mph sending his abductor/passenger through the window. then go back and take the other two by surprise, obviously procuring a weapon along the way.

I know that beep happens. I'm talking about the scenario in the film specifically. Having your family abducted from the side of the highway. Being in the middle of nowhere with a group of rapists and killers. It's unlikely because if anyone drives by, the criminals are screwed. They would pick a more strategic place to abduct from.

My point is they didn't care. Just had a guy in my home town sentenced to death for a mass murder. at his sentencing trial, knowing he was facing the death sentence, he still told the jury he felt no remorse and was glad he killed 9 people. I also read about a woman kidnapped from the Target parking lot in broad daylight. Some people are sociopaths and don't care about the consequences of their actions. It's also hubris. The guys in the film have been doing this for a while, even had a trailer they'd been using for a while. Other than the fact that they knew the area and the lack of cell coverage, no they couldn't know. But my point is they didn't care. and a car did drive by, a cop actually and he didn't stop cuz he was heading to another emergency.

It's not an implausible situation at all. Do you think things like that don't happen in real life? they do.
He coulnd't have driven on a flat tire, they would have caught up in no time. They couldn't have run away, women run slower than men, again would have been useless.
Chances of someone driving by (and bothering to take the risk to stop) were also very low. -

I understand that for the purpose of the novel Tony must be weak and loses to the three dudes, which gets him to lose his family but then for the purpose of the movie why did they pick Jake Gyllenhall who is as buffed as the main leader of the three ? They should have picked a skinny scared-looking guy.

Pick up a rock, smash, pulverise, stamp, punch, bite and destroy.
Yes, absolutely. I can can only visualize positive consequences resulting from that strategy.
Then on to enjoy the rest of the vacation, right? -

When and if you are driven off the road in the middle of the night by three or four hill billys in the middle of nowhere, then yes i believe you are fighting for your life. The problem is, the it factor. Some people will literally do whatever they can to survive, others will cry and scream why, why!!! tigerfish, which are you?

And you can visualize ANY positive outcome from just doing whatever the criminals tell you to do?. Because you trust all people are deep down good and so they won't hamd you and your family? You'll just end up raped and killed. Happens all the friggin time. Fighting doesn't give you a great chance, but it gives you a chance.
