Starts with a major disadvantage, coming in the wake of a century-old classic and a remake that was a classic in its own right, but it's Eggers–it's guaranteed to be interesting and virtually guaranteed to be good.

Saw it today. There were some things here that I really liked, but some things didn't completely work for me. The cinematography was excellent. Costumes and production design were great and the score was a standout as well. Performances were hit and miss. I liked Willem Dafoe best, but thought Nicholas Hoult fell a little flat. I was expecting more out of Bill Skarsgård. Everyone else was mostly fine. The story wasn't always engaging though and the film felt overlong. They could have cut 20 minutes from it easily. Some scenes felt like that went on too long, but other scenes felt too quick. There were a couple really effective moments though. A mixed bag (or maybe a mixed coffin?), but still worth watching. 7/10
