It's mandatory now that all prisoners work while in the pen. It is in California at least. But your choice of access to scrap metal and toxic waste is not a very wise idea.

I'm talking about the sorting the type of stuff that ends up in you average trash truck. And doing so under 10x the normal guard and the guards being trained soldiers supervised by experienced civilian professional corrections officers. Will some be stupid enough to test their luck? Sure. Bet they wont try it twice after some soldiers feed them a face full of floor and an ass full of boot. And those soldiers who have altercations can be rotated out to prevent retaliation.

But I'm telling you I've been in the pen and I know how it works. The guards are not the brightest bulbs on earth. And they can be bribed. And we don't need to waste the defense budget and our military monitoring prisons.
Again, prisoners are already required to work. And maybe in some states they already help in recycling. But your idea of giving access to scrap metal and toxic waste to prisoners is just lunatic.
Why? There's no point. Let them make license plates. Let them eat cake. But keep them away from dangerous materials.

We are already wasting the defense budget on substandard training designed for the lowest common denominator. You can trust ME on that. Bribing soldiers who rotate in and out would be considerably more difficult. It also wouldnt cost us more that it already does. These are men who are being paid to train anyway. We are just changing where they do it.
So a prisoner has access to a pile of junk. May contain some scrap or toxic items may not. They work for 8 hours sorting crap under heavy guard. They proceed to the cool down area where they strip naked and pass through a full body scanner. Then they shower and are issued clean jump suits. The dirty are scanned and searched separately before being sent in to clean.
Explain to me how they are going to do a damn thing? With only 8 hours? With armed soldiers watching from elevated positions? 3 shifts never the same pile of trash twice? Drug sniffing dogs patrolling the cell blocks? I dont see them managing to get away with much. Trying sure. Succeeding? Lol!
Those few stupid enough to make multiple attempts can find themselves in solitary with a pedal device that powers the lights. On a diet of water and tasteless nutrient bars.
We dont need a **** load of licence plates. We need to take care of our massive trash problems.

So while we go to war with Iran you want to tie our military up on a domestic problem of prisons and recycling?
That's not the job of the military and our Department of Defense would be the first to squash your plan. I see no benefit to replacing prison guards with the military.
You want to create some expensive government program to do a job which capitalism will take care of more effectively.
Recycling is a great industry for the private sector which provides jobs.

What part of 'lowest common denominator training' did you not hear. It is piss poor training. And you are paying for it with your taxes. And our soldiers are paying for it in blood.
And Iran is irrelevant to the discussion even when some troops are deployed over seas there are still troops training at home.
Were you not ****ing listening? There is little to no cost different between shipping troops to some empty field or village mockup to shipping the to the nearest recycle center. Those centers will pay for themselves by value of the mass of materials recovered. This is forcing the government to engage in capitalism.
