Cuz by today's standards a man that wears full women's makeup is considered QUEER
But these rock guys didn't get stigmatized. They treated like sex gods. -

LOL They didn't look like that outside of the concert venue.
Most of what you saw was promotional stuff, not reality.
Also, according to Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, most of them wore wigs.

Glam rock bands from the 60s and 70s paved the way for the 80s bands. David Bowie is a prime example. It was also the beginning of the sexual revolution where it was cool to be bisexual, wear makeup, platforms and women’s clothing. Watch The Velvet Goldmine movie.
