The Walt Disney Company announced Tuesday that Bob Iger will be stepping down as its chief executive officer (CEO) effective immediately, but will remain executive chairman of the company through 2021.
Bob Chapek, who served as the chairman of Disney Parks, will assume Iger's role as CEO.
"With the successful launch of Disney's direct-to-consumer businesses and the integration of Twenty-First Century Fox well underway, I believe this is an optimal time to transition to a new CEO," Iger said in a statement. "I have the utmost confidence in Bob and look forward to working closely with him over the next 22 months as he assumes this new role and delves deeper into Disney's multifaceted global businesses and operations, while I continue to focus on the company's creative endeavors."
Iger first joined ABC in 1974 and later served as president of the network when it was bought by Disney in 1996. He later became chief operating officer (COO) in 2000 and CEO in 2005.

Someone who expressed support of a potential Iger candidacy was Oprah Winfrey.
"If Bob Iger had decided to run for president, I would be canvassing in Iowa right now," she told Iger in a 2019 conversation. "I would be going door to door."
"More than ever, every day, I wish you had done it," she added.

In 1998, a career military officer was elected president of the wealthiest country in Latin America on a platform of socialism. It was an election victory that shocked the world, as many believed that the catastrophic failure of the Soviet Union had closed the book on socialism as a form of government.

After assuming power, Chavez instituted a traditional socialist agenda, hiking taxes, nationalizing private industries and increasing spending on social programs to 40 percent of GDP.
From 2007 to 2010, the Chavez regime seized majority control of four massive oil projects and American-owned oil rigs, and implemented a new tax on oil production, among other measures.
"Chavez won four national elections in a row," said Baier in the Fox Nation piece, "But when oil prices fell, the flaws of what was now called Chavismo were starkly revealed."

"What happens is that concentrated power and coercion that is a necessary part of socialism will distort the economy and then breed the need for more power for the government in the future to try to correct the inefficiencies that they've created in the past," argued American Enterprise Institute scholar Mark Perry.
"Once the government starts to take over the economy, and uses force and coercion and creates distortions that breed future government interventions to correct their past mistakes, and then you're down the road to serfdom," said Perry.

Five Italian hikers were rescued from the remote Alaskan wilderness over the weekend after they visited an abandoned bus featured in the popular book and film “Into the Wild.”
Alaska State Trooper spokesman Tim DeSpain told The Associated Press that the hikers were found 13 miles from the beginning of Stampede Trail, where the bus, which has been the source of multiple rescues and several deaths, is located.
NEWLYWED WOMAN, 24, DIES IN ALASKA RIVER TRYING TO REACH FAMOUS ‘INTO THE WILD’ BUS
A satellite-based emergency device notified the International Emergency Response Coordination Center of a medical emergency and they notified rescuers, who reached the site by snowmobile, DeSpain said.
One of the hikers was found suffering from frostbite to his feet. He was taken to a hospital in Fairbanks for treatment. The remaining hikers, who were picked up by friends, had non-life-threating injuries.

Saturday’s rescue was the latest involving the bus, first made famous by Jon Krakauer’s book published in 1996 and then by Sean Penn’s 2007 film of the same name. Both fueled a lingering mystique about a young idealist, Christopher McCandless, who met his death from starvation in the bus, which is about 10 miles north of the entrance to Denali National Park and Preserve.
In July, a 24-year-old woman from Belarus died after troopers said she was swept away by a strong current while crossing a river to reach the bus. She had been married for less than a month at the time fo her death.
In 2013, three German hikers trying to reach the bus were rescued after a river they crossed became impassable because of high, fast-moving water.

Families of some of those who died are now behind a proposal before Denali Borough for a feasibility study for the construction of a footbridge over the Teklanika.
The idea is in the early stages, and no decision has been made. But borough Mayor Clay Walker said there are several concerns among officials. A footbridge might give people a false sense of security. It could lead to more people trying to reach the bus, and that could lead to more rescues, Walker said.

A letter signed by community leaders, people of color and the loved ones of those killed by New York City police officers urged voters not to support Mike Bloomberg during next month's Super Tuesday elections.
The open letter, dated Monday, comes as the former New York mayor faces mounting criticism for controversial practices like stop and frisk, which negatively impacted many residents of color, and a spike in economic inequality across New York over the 12 years he led America's largest city.
"We lived under the Bloomberg administration," the letter states. "His governing record in New York – a period that lasted 12 years, because he used his wealth and influence to change the law and give himself an additional term – was abysmal and destructive."

The letter was signed by nearly 90 people and groups, including Kisha Walker, whose brother Sean Bell was killed by the NYPD in 2006, sparking a wave of protests around the city, and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.
The letter goes on to list various policies under Bloomberg, including stop and frisk, the surveillance of Muslim communities in the city, an uptick in arrests for marijuana possession that critics say targeted young people of color, even though whites use the drug at equal or higher rates, and the closing of schools in low-income neighborhoods.
“As more voters of color begin to have their say in the Democratic presidential primaries, we hope that you’ll heed our advice: stay away from Mike Bloomberg," the letter said. "After four years of Trump, the last thing our country needs is someone who will champion racist and discriminatory policies, exacerbate economic inequality, and undermine democracy with his wealth.”
The Bloomberg campaign did not immediately respond to a Fox News request for comment on the letter.

March 3 – which is Super Tuesday this year – will see many states, including California and Texas, holding their primaries, with around 40 percent of Americans slated to vote.
New York holds its primary on April 28.
Bloomberg has seen a surge in polling in recent weeks as he continues to spend millions of his own money to finance his campaign. He was a lifelong Democrat before switching to the Republican Party before becoming mayor. He left the GOP to register as an independent in 2007 and re-registered as a Democrat in 2018.

Two of the world's most famous activists – Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg – met Tuesday at Oxford University.
Thunberg, a 17-year-old climate change activist, and Yousafzai, a 22-year-old Nobel Peace Price laureate who has fought for the rights of girls to have an education, took pictures with one another sitting on a wooden bench.
Yousafzai is currently studying politics, philosophy and economics at Oxford.

"So… today I met my role model. What else can I say?" Thunberg tweeted alongside a pair of pictures of the two.
Yousafzai shared the pictures on Instagram and later joked on Twitter that Thunberg is "the only friend I'd skip school for."
Yousafzai became an activist after being shot in the head by the Taliban on her way home from school nearly eight years ago.
Thunberg, who was nominated for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize earlier this month, has made waves globally for her campaign to draw attention to the climate crisis. She has also encouraged students to skip school to join protests demanding action from politicians and elected leaders on the subject.
Thunberg has found a fiery opponent in President Trump and the two have a history of taking swipes at one another.

Duffy, the singer behind the 2008 hit “Mercy,” shared a heartbreaking tale about why she’s remained distant and absent from the world of music for so many years following her second album, “Endlessly,” which was released nearly 10 years ago.
“You can only imagine the amount of times I thought about writing this. The way I would write it, how I would feel thereafter. Well, not entirely sure why now is the right time, and what it is that feels exciting and liberating for me to talk. I cannot explain it,” Duffy wrote on Tuesday in a lengthy Instagram post accompanied by a black-and-white image of her on a narrow street.
The singer explained that a number of fans had speculated “what happened to me, where did I disappear to and why,” adding that she was finally contacted by a journalist over the summer who she felt compelled to share her story with.

“He was kind and it felt so amazing to finally speak,” she said before explaining her absence to the world.
“The truth is, and please trust me I am ok and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days. Of course I survived. The recovery took time. There’s no light way to say it. But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine.”

“You wonder why I did not choose to use my voice to express my pain? I did not want to show the world the sadness in my eyes,” she explained. “I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if it is broken? And slowly it unbroke. In the following weeks I will be posting a spoken interview. If you have any questions I would like to answer them, in the spoken interview, if I can. The man, identified by The Daily Mail and local media as Leandro Sebastian Martinez, has had a warrant out for his arrest since late January. The victim’s parents – in a bid to catch him in the act – reportedly set up security cameras in her bedroom at the family’s Buenos Aires home.

A woman in Texas made a bizarre catch while pier fishing in Port Isabel. Fortunately, she didn’t touch the creature as doing so could have left her in pain for hours.
Alyssa Ramirez said she initially thought a piece of seaweed had become entangled in her line, USA Today/For the Win Outdoors reported. Then she said she saw it start squirming and realized that it was a living creature.
“My mom and I looked at each other like, ‘What is that?’” Ramirez told USA Today/For The Win Outdoors. “I laughed because that was definitely not a fish.”

It turns out it wasn’t a fish, but a potentially dangerous marine worm.
“Luckily I didn’t have to touch it because it let go of my bait,” Ramirez told the news outlet. “By the way it moved and the red colors it had, I knew not to touch it. I placed it on the rail of the pier [where it let go and] I took video and pictures of it…It wiggled around for a few minutes and then it then fell into the water by itself.”

Ramirez said it was “a good 3 inches long.”

House Oversight Committee ranking member Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, discussed the push to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) on "Bill Hemmer Reports" Tuesday, calling for a designated advocate to represent U.S. citizens involved in matters that might come before the court.
"We need to change how this works," said Jordan before calling for "some advocate" to be tasked with "actually representing the American citizen who is about to lose some of their rights."
Last year, Justice Department Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz released a report detailing significant inaccuracies and omissions on the part of the FBI in its FISA warrant applications. A major aspect of the report exposed the degree to which the FBI had relied on an unverified dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele as part of opposition research for Hillary Clinton's campaign.
GRAHAM REVEALS BIG QUESTIONS HE HAS AHEAD OF SENATE FISA PROBE
"We have to remember what prompted this all," Jordan said. "Remember, it was The Justice Department in 2016 that went to the FISA court and mislead the court, a nice way of saying they lied to the court 17 times."
Sen. Graham to begin investigation into potential FISA abusesVideo
Jordan said the Senate Judiciary Committee would attempt to answer some of the unsolved questions surrounding the Russia probe, which began in secret during the 2016 presidential campaign, as well as the FBI’s use of FISA warrants to surveil former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
"That is what is prompting all of this and why we need to make the changes," he said, adding, it is also "why we need to have an advocate there to defend the interest of the citizens."
REP. COLLINS ON FISA REFORM EFFORTS: 'WE NEED TO RESTORE AMERICA'S TRUST IN IT
Jordan criticized House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., for his handling of the probe, and has proposed legislation that is "much better" and far more "consistent with the principles that are part of our Constitution and our Bill of Rights," he explained.
"The most important aspect is this an amicus process is where we have someone representing the individual who's about to lose their fundamental liberties," Jordan reiterated to host Bill Hemmer.
The lawmaker also urged the FISA court to begin recording proceedings in official transcripts and said surveillance of political figures and campaigns could only be approved with a "sign-off" from the "highest levels of the Justice Department."
Rep. Collins on push to amend FISA: 'We need to restore the American peoples trust in it'Video
"I think when we are talking about a candidate, talking about a campaign, an election and a person running for office, or the staffers of those campaigns or members of office,"Jordan said, "that there is a sign-off before that kind of procedure moves forward, a sign-off from the highest levels of the Justice Department before any type of surveillance can take place."
On Sunday, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Doug Collins, R-Ga., stressed the importance of the public's trust in the FISA process, telling Maria Bartiromo that if America could not trust the FISA court, “people will not have confidence that our intelligence communities are doing what they need to be doing and being able to use this court properly.”

Collins added, "Hopefully we’ll be able to make some changes to it” so that intelligence officials could restore the “trust factor."
