Five Italian hikers were rescued from the remote Alaskan wilderness over the weekend after they visited an abandoned bus featured in the popular book and film “Into the Wild.”
Alaska State Trooper spokesman Tim DeSpain told The Associated Press that the hikers were found 13 miles from the beginning of Stampede Trail, where the bus, which has been the source of multiple rescues and several deaths, is located.

Both fueled a lingering mystique about a young idealist, Christopher McCandless, who met his death from starvation in the bus, which is about 10 miles north of the entrance to Denali National Park and Preserve.
In July, a 24-year-old woman from Belarus died after troopers said she was swept away by a strong current while crossing a river to reach the bus. She had been married for less than a month at the time fo her death.
In 2013, three German hikers trying to reach the bus were rescued after a river they crossed became impassable because of high, fast-moving water.

The idea is in the early stages, and no decision has been made. But borough Mayor Clay Walker said there are several concerns among officials. A footbridge might give people a false sense of security. It could lead to more people trying to reach the bus, and that could lead to more rescues, Walker said.

The open letter, dated Monday, comes as the former New York mayor faces mounting criticism for controversial practices like stop and frisk, which negatively impacted many residents of color, and a spike in economic inequality across New York over the 12 years he led America's largest city.

House Oversight Committee ranking member Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, discussed the push to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) on "Bill Hemmer Reports" Tuesday, calling for a designated advocate to represent U.S. citizens involved in matters that might come before the court.
"We need to change how this works," said Jordan before calling for "some advocate" to be tasked with "actually representing the American citizen who is about to lose some of their rights."
Last year, Justice Department Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz released a report detailing significant inaccuracies and omissions on the part of the FBI in its FISA warrant applications. A major aspect of the report exposed the degree to which the FBI had relied on an unverified dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele as part of opposition research for Hillary Clinton's campaign.

"The most important aspect is this an amicus process is where we have someone representing the individual who's about to lose their fundamental liberties," Jordan reiterated to host Bill Hemmer.
The lawmaker also urged the FISA court to begin recording proceedings in official transcripts and said surveillance of political figures and campaigns could only be approved with a "sign-off" from the "highest levels of the Justice Department."

On Sunday, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Doug Collins, R-Ga., stressed the importance of the public's trust in the FISA process, telling Maria Bartiromo that if America could not trust the FISA court, “people will not have confidence that our intelligence communities are doing what they need to be doing and being able to use this court properly.”

The FBI and NYPD Tuesday morning raided the Time Square offices of Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard as part of a sex-trafficking investigation, officials said.
Nicholas Biase, a spokesman for the US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan, confirmed to The Post that the raid was carried out but would not elaborate or provide details.

Photos from the scene show federal agents and city cops swarming throughout the company’s Broadway headquarters, and hauling away at least a half-dozen cardboard boxes from the building.
Nygard and his company, Nygard International, have been under investigation for months after several women accused the 78-year-old of sexually assaulting them in his Lyford Cay estate in the Bahamas, sources told The Post.
The ritzy retreat was once featured on “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,” ABC News reported.
Tuesday’s raid comes on the heels of a federal lawsuit filed Feb. 13 against Nygard and his company by 10 women who accuse the Canadian businessman of a “decades-long sex-trafficking scheme” — among them a 15-year-old girl.

According to the lawsuit, Nygard regularly hosted sex- and alcohol-laced gatherings called “pamper parties” at the Bahamian estate and in California, where young girls were allegedly subjected to depraved fetishes.
The parties were “both to promote the Nygard company’s brand and facilitate commercial sex acts,” according to the lawsuit.
