Duffy, the singer behind the 2008 hit “Mercy,” shared a heartbreaking tale about why she’s remained distant and absent from the world of music for so many years following her second album, “Endlessly,” which was released nearly 10 years ago.
“You can only imagine the amount of times I thought about writing this. The way I would write it, how I would feel thereafter. Well, not entirely sure why now is the right time, and what it is that feels exciting and liberating for me to talk. I cannot explain it,” Duffy wrote on Tuesday in a lengthy Instagram post accompanied by a black-and-white image of her on a narrow street.
The singer explained that a number of fans had speculated “what happened to me, where did I disappear to and why,” adding that she was finally contacted by a journalist over the summer who she felt compelled to share her story with.

“He was kind and it felt so amazing to finally speak,” she said before explaining her absence to the world.
“The truth is, and please trust me I am ok and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days. Of course I survived. The recovery took time. There’s no light way to say it. But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine.”

Though Duffy did not name her alleged abuser, she said that over the course of her absence from music, her heart slowly “unbroke.”

“You wonder why I did not choose to use my voice to express my pain? I did not want to show the world the sadness in my eyes,” she explained. “I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if it is broken? And slowly it unbroke. In the following weeks I will be posting a spoken interview. If you have any questions I would like to answer them, in the spoken interview, if I can. I have a sacred love and sincere appreciation for your kindness over the years. You have been friends. I want to thank you for that x.”

The singer’s 2008 hit single “Mercy” peaked at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the time and Duffy even took home a Grammy award in 2008 for best pop vocal album for “Rockferry.” She also garnered two more nominations in the same year for best new artist and best female pop vocal performance with “Mercy.”

House Oversight Committee ranking member Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, discussed the push to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) on "Bill Hemmer Reports" Tuesday, calling for a designated advocate to represent U.S. citizens involved in matters that might come before the court.
"We need to change how this works," said Jordan before calling for "some advocate" to be tasked with "actually representing the American citizen who is about to lose some of their rights."
Last year, Justice Department Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz released a report detailing significant inaccuracies and omissions on the part of the FBI in its FISA warrant applications. A major aspect of the report exposed the degree to which the FBI had relied on an unverified dossier compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele as part of opposition research for Hillary Clinton's campaign.
GRAHAM REVEALS BIG QUESTIONS HE HAS AHEAD OF SENATE FISA PROBE
"We have to remember what prompted this all," Jordan said. "Remember, it was The Justice Department in 2016 that went to the FISA court and mislead the court, a nice way of saying they lied to the court 17 times."
Sen. Graham to begin investigation into potential FISA abusesVideo
Jordan said the Senate Judiciary Committee would attempt to answer some of the unsolved questions surrounding the Russia probe, which began in secret during the 2016 presidential campaign, as well as the FBI’s use of FISA warrants to surveil former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
"That is what is prompting all of this and why we need to make the changes," he said, adding, it is also "why we need to have an advocate there to defend the interest of the citizens."
REP. COLLINS ON FISA REFORM EFFORTS: 'WE NEED TO RESTORE AMERICA'S TRUST IN IT
Jordan criticized House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., for his handling of the probe, and has proposed legislation that is "much better" and far more "consistent with the principles that are part of our Constitution and our Bill of Rights," he explained.
"The most important aspect is this an amicus process is where we have someone representing the individual who's about to lose their fundamental liberties," Jordan reiterated to host Bill Hemmer.
The lawmaker also urged the FISA court to begin recording proceedings in official transcripts and said surveillance of political figures and campaigns could only be approved with a "sign-off" from the "highest levels of the Justice Department."
Rep. Collins on push to amend FISA: 'We need to restore the American peoples trust in it'Video
"I think when we are talking about a candidate, talking about a campaign, an election and a person running for office, or the staffers of those campaigns or members of office,"Jordan said, "that there is a sign-off before that kind of procedure moves forward, a sign-off from the highest levels of the Justice Department before any type of surveillance can take place."
On Sunday, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Doug Collins, R-Ga., stressed the importance of the public's trust in the FISA process, telling Maria Bartiromo that if America could not trust the FISA court, “people will not have confidence that our intelligence communities are doing what they need to be doing and being able to use this court properly.”

Collins added, "Hopefully we’ll be able to make some changes to it” so that intelligence officials could restore the “trust factor."

The FBI and NYPD Tuesday morning raided the Time Square offices of Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard as part of a sex-trafficking investigation, officials said.
Nicholas Biase, a spokesman for the US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan, confirmed to The Post that the raid was carried out but would not elaborate or provide details.

Photos from the scene show federal agents and city cops swarming throughout the company’s Broadway headquarters, and hauling away at least a half-dozen cardboard boxes from the building.
Nygard and his company, Nygard International, have been under investigation for months after several women accused the 78-year-old of sexually assaulting them in his Lyford Cay estate in the Bahamas, sources told The Post.
The ritzy retreat was once featured on “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,” ABC News reported.
Tuesday’s raid comes on the heels of a federal lawsuit filed Feb. 13 against Nygard and his company by 10 women who accuse the Canadian businessman of a “decades-long sex-trafficking scheme” — among them a 15-year-old girl.
HARVEY WEINSTEIN IS ‘FLABBERGASTED BY THE VERDICT,’ DEFENSE ATTORNEY SAYS
According to the lawsuit, Nygard regularly hosted sex- and alcohol-laced gatherings called “pamper parties” at the Bahamian estate and in California, where young girls were allegedly subjected to depraved fetishes.
The parties were “both to promote the Nygard company’s brand and facilitate commercial sex acts,” according to the lawsuit.

More than 200 Native Americans, most of them Cherokee, have signed an open letter to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., stating that her past claims of Cherokee heritage were "harmful" and "dangerous" – and that her apologies and statements on the issue, while appreciated, leave much to be desired.
Warren has said in the past that she has Cherokee and Delaware ancestry. She eventually released the results of a DNA test that showed "strong evidence" her background was mainly European but with a Native American ancestor from six to 10 generations in the past. Tribe members took issue with this for linking tribal membership to DNA instead of culture.
WARREN REVIVES DISPUTED PREGNANCY DISCRIMINATION CLAIM AT DEMOCRATIC DEBATE
"Whatever your intentions, your actions have normalized white people claiming to be Native, and perpetuated a dangerous misunderstanding of tribal sovereignty," the letter said, citing instances of "white members of fake 'tribes'" using family stories and DNA tests to benefit from government contracts meant for minorities.
"When you still defend yourself by stating you believed what you heard growing up, you set a harmful example for these white people stealing Native identity and resources with stories very similar to your own," the letter said.
The tribal citizens explained that – contrary to common belief – Native Americans are members of political groups, not a racial category. Meanwhile, their political opponents have tried to argue that laws protecting Native rights are unconstitutional because they give preference based on race.
"If they win, it could be the end of tribes as we know them," the letter continued. "By publicly equating race and biology with Native identity, your DNA test promoted the exact same logic the Right is currently using to try and destroy Native rights."
The letter recognized Warren's apology for her claims and her clarification that she does not qualify for Cherokee citizenship. However, the tribal citizens insisted more needs to be done.
"While your apologies are a step in the right direction, they have been vague and inadequate. Accountability is not just admitting you made a mistake, but working to correct the harm it caused," they wrote.
ELIZABETH WARREN APOLOGIZES TO CHEROKEE NATION FOR TAKING DNA TEST TO PROVE NATIVE-AMERICAN ROOTS
They now call on Warren to issue a statement recognizing the following: that her past claim is false and she should not have repeated it; explaining the dangers of "equating Native identity with race and biology"; and stating that only Native Americans can determine who is native, as "[c]aiming Native identity without citizenship, kinship ties, or recognition from Native communities undermines Indigenous self determination."
The letter was signed by 143 Cherokee tribe members, plus an additional 75 Native Americans from other tribes. It concluded on a positive note about how Warren can use this controversy as a teaching moment.
"You have done some good things for Indian Country during your time in political service. You have also done real harm. Right now you have the platform and the opportunity to stand firmly on the side of justice," it said.
When reached for comment, Warren's campaign directed Fox News to a lengthy reply letter Warren penned in response to the Cherokee citizens which had been reported by the Los Angeles Times.
In the letter, Warren made clear, "I am a white woman, and that is how I identify." She recognized that only the tribal nations can determine citizenship, not DNA.

"And I understand that the confusion my actions propagated around tribal sovereignty and citizenship caused real harm to Native people and communities," she said.
"Through the many conversations I've had with tribal leaders, advocates, and others from across Indian Country, I've listened and I've learned—a lot," Warren continued, adding, "It is not the responsibility of the Native community to educate me on the harm they suffered as the result of my actions, and I pledge to be worthy of the friendship and trust that they showed to me in these moments."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government cleared an ongoing impasse with indigenous chiefs who’ve now agreed to meet Thursday to negotiate an end to weeks of railway blockades that triggered cancellations for thousands of passengers, layoffs and sparked fears of food and supply shortages across the country.
Blockades on strategic railway points across the country began to pop up in early February after Wet’suwet’en Nation hereditary chiefs growingly pushed back on the construction of a $5 million Coastal GasLink pipeline project that crosses their traditional territory in northwestern British Columbia.

TRUDEAU CALLS EMERGENCY MEETING AFTER CANADA PIPELINE PROTEST SHUTS DOWN RAILWAY SERVICE FOR THOUSANDS
Chief Na’Moks (John Risdale) announced that he'd meet with either Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller or Indigenous-Crown Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett on Thursday after the Wet’suwet’en Nation, federal and provincial governments were able to resolve a “terrible miscommunication” about whether talks would take place, Global News Canada reported.

The chief initially demanded all construction at the Coastal GasLink pipeline be discontinued and all Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) presence leave their territory before talks began. Trudeau's government asked the Wet’suwet’en Nation to call for an end to blockades across the country before entering talks. But the Wet’suwet’en chiefs declined, arguing, under indigenous law, they cannot tell other indigenous nations what to do in their own territories.

The province of British Columbia appointed a special liaison, Nathan Cullen, to facilitate talks between the two sides. British Columbia Premier John Horgan said in a previous statement Wednesday it was “unfortunate” the two sides couldn’t come together to reach an agreement.
“We had hoped the hereditary chiefs would agree to a period of peace and respect during the talks, which would include encouraging their supporters to remove blockades,” he said, according to Global News Canada.
Bennett also told reporters Wednesday she has reached out to Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs and was hoping to get a response from them on whether they’d extend an invitation to her and her British Columbia counterpart to meet to discuss ongoing anti-pipeline protests and rail blockade, CPAC-TV, Canada’s 24/7 Politics TV, reported.

In Parliament Monday, Trudeau was slammed by Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer for caving to “radical leftists” by waiting 19 days before finally clearing police to enforce a court-ordered injunction to remove demonstrators from the tracks, The New York Times reported. Trudeau faced criticism as the blockades led to transport cancellations for hundreds of thousands of passengers this month, and prompted supply shortages and layoffs for at least 1,000 railway employees.
“It’s a new day, and we started it by burning the injunction delivered by CN rail!” a Facebook group named Wet’suwet’en Strong: Hamilton in Solidarity, which claimed responsibility for the blockade, wrote in an online update Tuesday, National Post reported. “Remember why we’re out here; the violence the state has perpetrated towards Indigenous land defenders and their supporters, the forced removal and criminalization of Indigenous people from their lands.”
Police descended on a rail blockade in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in central Ontario on Monday morning, enforcing the court injunction ordered earlier this month on behalf of the Canadian National Railway (CN) to clear the tracks. They arrested 10 people – all of whom have since been charged and released, according to BBC. The Mohawk First Nation met with Wet'suwet'en Nation on Friday to work together to continue their blockade effort.

Oligarchs consolidating power and wealth benefit from creating an atmosphere of uncertainty, disbelief in facts, making it seem like political parties and leaders are uniformly corrupt, so there is nothing that can be done. It is what it is. If this was not so relevant for previous administrations, now we must admit that this is what it is. An administration that surpasses previous ones in corruption is possible because of a groundwork laid over decades of practices that make democracy, equity, and social good far secondary to wealth and power.
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.
