      Bast,
People who mistakenly come to believe that God is so loving and merciful, He overlooks sin, do themselves a great disservice and do those, who are lost, an even greater disservice.
God's love is not so much an infinite love, as it is the most perfect love. And the perfection of His love is perfectly expressed through His Son and through the cross.
Those people also tend to downplay the severity of the sin state. However, if sin weren't such a serious thing, then it wouldn't have required Y'Shua, His Son, suffering on the cross and dying for our sins. But it did. That's how serious the issue of sin is. All I need to know that sin is a serious thing is to look and see what it took to defeat it. All I need to know how deep and pure God's love is is to look, again, at the cross.
God is Merciful, Loving and Forgiving. But God is also Just, Holy and Righteous. You cannot separate any of these from the others. God's Mercy is measured by His Justice. His Justice is tendered by His Forgiveness. It's all connected and all part of who He is. Separating any one from the rest gives you an incomplete and errant representation of God and puts the person, who does so, in jeopardy of having established faith in THEIR idealization of God and not the God who truly is. Place your trust in the One, True God and believe Him and how He reveals Himself to you, through His Word. In doing that, you will find that you have the correct God.

It must be quite tricky 'second guessing' what God accepts or rejects, your whole life!
Especially when the Bible is so contradictory!
Place your trust in the One, True God and believe Him and how He reveals Himself to you, through His Word. In doing that, you will find that you have the correct God.
..and which one would that be?
        What religion or denomination?

All of them if we truly repent?
          Yes, if you genuinely repent.
          Read Isaiah 1:16-18
          Especially vs.18
I've been struggling with this question for years and I've sometimes wondered if it's too late or unrealistic to expect forgiveness
          No, never. .
          Don't feel it's hopeless.
Satan wants you to think that way, though.
Our efforts to atone, even if sincere, are no guarantee to be accepted.
If you've done bad things, how would you demonstrate that your repentance
          is
          sincere?
          By trying real hard to
          not do them again
          ! Pray for help, and
          then work
          in harmony
          with your prayers
          !
For example, if getting drunk is a problem, stop going to bars! You may need further help. If help is available but you arbitrarily refuse it, you're defeating your prayer, and God's help.
Although I believe God is merciful and forgiving, there is no way to know for sure, how much.
Sure there is! Jehovah sent His Son to sacrifice for us, and Jesus willingly came! They love us, and will help if we listen to them.

            Yet more, illogical cr@p!
Are you seriously saying that people of all faiths, who either don't know of your version of Jesus(whatev) are doomed because YOUR version of what you think is right is not adhered to?
What gives you the temerity to speak for all the thoughts, beliefs and non- beliefs of billions of people who live and have lived on this earth, and call them wrong or ill-informed and say that there is, in YOUR view a price for eternal pain and torment to be paid, because of this?
For beep's sake can't you realised that you have been brainwashed with this beep so that you don't leave your faith and stop paying your tithes or whatever to a fake church?
            You people are outrageous!
            What gives you the right?
As an atheistic agnostic I have no rights, agenda and no expectations except to look for truth for ALL people and respect the rights and beliefs of moderates in ANY religion who don't wish to impose it on others.
Believe what you like butt don't impose it on others.
This is actually the mantra of all atheists and agnostics, despite the religious who can only view us in terms of their own fanatical fallacious and delusional beliefs.

Did I say anything to discredit anyone? No!
Take a pill, sleep it off.
(Maybe you're already on drugs..that would explain it)
Curious, what specifically did I say to rile you?

No, I pushed your button, because, as JW you hear this all the time and it is water off a duck's back.
In this case I am please to say that the truth range true, hence your reaction to my words on a message board page.
You know all those people whose doors you knock on , who are polite?
My post is what they are REALLY saying about your delusional nonsense.

                  No, not quite. You, maybe.
But there are many who listen to us and are receptive, enough so that about 5,300
                  every week
                  become baptized Witnesses of Jehovah!
                  Yippee!
Have a good day, my cousin.

I said the same gullible people voted in that way as would be JW's.
