Return of the Wolves - Curse or a Blessing?
While many large predators decline worldwide, other species in this group experience a resurgence.
The wolves spread rapidly in Europe. This also benefits many people.
Estimated 21,500 wolves live in Europe.

According to researchers, the wolf population in Europe increased by 58% within ten years.
The reintroduction of wolves in Europe is a significant conservation success, writes the team led by
Cecilia Di Bernardi from the University of Agricultural Sciences in Riddarhyttan, Sweden.
Especially successful, given the landscape changes caused by humans and the high population density.
The downside: Wolves (Canis lupus) kill an estimated 56,000 livestock annually in the EU alone, resulting in compensation payments of around EUR 17 million per year, the researchers report in an overview of the consequences of the spread in the journal

No fatal Attacks on Humans for a long Time
According to the Norwegian
NINA
study, no fatal attacks by wolves on humans were recorded in Europe between 2002 and 2020. Attacks on humans reported in Italy and Greece were most likely caused by
domestic dogs rather than wolves. But there were rare non-fatal attacks.
For example, attacks can occur when wolves display fearless behaviour for an extended period and consume food provided by humans, such as garbage. From the previous three centuries, fatal attacks were known in Europe - often by wolves with rabies, which is now considered eradicated in Western and Central Europe.

The risk to humans from wolves is extremely low, but not zero.
"A wolf walking past a house or along a road isn't problematic."
Even a sighting of a wolf from a distance doesn't pose a risk.
"It becomes problematic when wolves are repeatedly sighted at close range and don't show caution, or when they regularly consume food near people or houses."
Since the wolves in the EU kill around 56,000 livestock annually, each wolf kills an average of around three livestock per year. While the total livestock population of 279 million is many times higher, the risk is unevenly distributed. It particularly affects livestock grazing outdoors. Sheep and goats account for about 2/3 of the losses. But cattle, horses, semi-domesticated reindeer, and dogs were also killed by wolves. Damage increases when wolves repopulate new areas, but subsequently decreases with protective measures.
Wolves great Benefits for Humans
The positive effects of wolves on humans are often overlooked. These include a reduction in traffic accidents involving deer and other wild animals, a reduction in wildlife damage to forests, and promotion of ecotourism.
In the US state of Wisconsin, the number of car collisions involving white-tailed deer decreased by an average of 24% in counties where wolves regained a foothold. This corresponds to
"an economic benefit 63 times greater than the costs of documented wolf attacks on livestock,"
the US researchers reported in the journal

in 2021. The reduction mostly is due to the changed deer behaviour caused by the presence of wolves βnot just a population decline due to wolf attacks.

Wolves can create a
"landscape of fear"
that alters deer behaviour. Wolves use roads as a travel corridor,
which can change the movement patterns of deer near them and thus reduce the risk of collisions with cars.
Means, wolves can mitigate economic damage caused by deer in a way that human hunters cannot achieve.
Few Accidents involving Wolves
While accidents involving wolves do occur, the number is extremely low.

20 car accidents involving wolves each year, compared to nearly 20,000 accidents with white-tailed deer."

EUR 2.4 - EUR 7.8 million in damage from traffic accidents annually by decimating deer and wild boar.
These and other potential benefits are insufficiently investigated and calculated in Europe.

The researchers estimate around 21,500 wolves on the European continent, without Russia, Belarus, and Moldova. The three small states of Monaco, San Marino, and the Vatican are the only countries on the European mainland where wolves weren't yet reintroduced.
Germany is one of the countries with a particularly high growth rate. The first wolf cub was recorded there in 2000, approximately 150 years after the extinction. 209 packs, 46 pairs, and 19 individual wolves were counted in the 2023/2024 monitoring year, according to the Federal Wolf Documentation and Advisory Center.

Update, April 11, 2025 15.00 p.m.: City confirms mysterious animal is a golden jackal
Responding to a request from ka-news.de, the city administration confirmed that the animal filmed was a golden jackal. The video was sent to the city and forwarded to the Baden-WΓΌrttemberg Forest Research Institute (FVA) in Freiburg for identification.
Experts there confirmed that a golden jackal did indeed cross the road in Durlach.
