EU Members allow faster Wolf Culling
EU member states approved a legislative amendment to speed up the culling of wolves.
They thus approved the EU Commission's proposal, according to which the wolf is no longer considered strictly protected, but the species' conservation should continue to be ensured. Among other things,
DNA analyses are no longer required.
For the regulation to enter into force, the European Parliament must still approve it.
EU member states must then formally adopt the amendment.
It's then up to the individual states whether to lower the protection status at their national level.

EU Countries approve Draft Law to speed up Wolf Culling
In Austria, the wolf is currently permitted to be culled by regulation.
Environmental NGOs consider culling unacceptable, even with a reduced protection status.
The wolf is a protected animal.
The wolf returned to Austria. 80 animals were recorded individually last year, and five packs [

Although the wolf is protected throughout the EU, hunting is still permitted in this country.
Currently, wolves that come too close to populated areas or are responsible for attacks are authorized for hunting by decree of the respective state government. A practice that conservationists consider illegal.

Many hunters

A survey shows that most people don't want wolves to be hunted.
The government should face the facts that wolf hunting is pointless and not wanted by the people.

according to a recent representative survey conducted by INSA on behalf of the BILD and published on April 19, 2025,

. Only 31% want the wolf to be included in hunting law and its protected status to be reduced. NABU Thuringia sees the results of this survey as a clear vote for the wolf in Germany and Thuringia. The responsible politicians and the government have a duty not to jeopardize decades of joint work on wolf protection in Germany for the interests of a vigorously lobbying anti-wolf scene that wants to hunt the wolf.

"Grazing animals play a minor role as food for wolves. These predators feed on over 95% wild animals and natural resources. We can understand if a grazing livestock farmer is shocked when arriving at the pasture in the morning and finds, for example, a sheep killed lying on the field. That's not a pleasant emotional experience. But hunting wolves doesn't help them. What really helps is proper protection of grazing livestock. Wolf attacks could've been avoided in about half of all incidents of wolf attacks in the Free State if effective livestock protection measures had been implemented on the affected pastures. Expenditures for effective livestock protection in Thuringia are already subsidized by up to 100%. This benefits both, grazing animals and wolves equally."

According to NABU Thuringia, the government should face up to the facts that wolf hunting is pointless and not wanted by the people. The Environment Ministry has the power to find pragmatic solutions and could, among other things, establish a

I saw a single wolf in northern Germany, near Kiel, in 1995.
Unfortunately, I cannot prove itβ¦yah, I know how
that
sounds.
But my family believes me, because the few huskies in our area (which can easily be mistaken for wolves in the dark) were at home, and the GSDs were with their owners.
There were no possible traces to be found, but it was raining, as usual, not only on the UK islands.

The wolves returned to Germany via Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989) and the opening of the borders. There were legitimate fears at the time that rabies might return with them too, but this problem was solved with vaccine baits.

Wolves could be shot more easily in the Future
Members of the EU Parliament voted in Strasbourg to lower the wolf's protection status under EU Law.
The change is a prerequisite for easier hunting of wolves.
Wolf
With the amendment now passed, the wolf will no longer be considered
"strictly protected"
but the species' conservation will continue to be ensured. This means that the conditions for culling wolves will be significantly simplified in the future. Unlike previously, complex DNA analyses will no longer be necessary.

No DNA testing before shooting a wolf who supposedly showed
'abnormal'
behaviour will lead to death sentences of many innocent wolves. DNA testing often revealed that the alleged
"evil wolf who murdered the innocent sheep"
(most often completely unprotected) was actually a stray dog.

Wolf Cubs alive after Loss of Mother
Wolf experts hadn't expected this:
Although their mother was run over in the Segeberg Forest, her cubs survived.
Contrary to the prognosis, young wolves of the Segeberg family survived.
Leastwise five pups from the hit-and-run female wolf of the Segeberg family survived. This is shown by photographs of the pups taken on May 17, 2025 according to the State Office for Environment. After the death of the female wolf on Easter Monday, experts had assumed that the offspring would not survive.
Apparently, the family had cared for the pups, the spokesperson said. The young were likely fed chewed food. It's possible that it was a very early litter and the pups already reached the transition phase from milk to solid food.
The only confirmed wolf family in Schleswig-Holstein lives in the Segeberg Forest.

I'm also pleased that the little ones survived, but it's strange that the

are so surprised.
They should know that siblings (babies from the previous year) continue to care for their

siblings, regardless of whether the wolf parents are still alive or not.
And where's father wolf? If he wasn't illegally shot, he cares for his offspring, just like the others.

After the death of a female wolf near Rickling in spring 2025, the fate of her cubs was initially uncertain. It's now clear: The cubs are alive β thanks to their father and siblings.

After 30 days alone in the forest, 50% of the schizoids return cured.
The other half are usually never seen again.
