Causes of Wolves Death in Saxony-Anhalt 2000-2025
140 dead wolves found in Saxony-Anhalt [
2.1 Mio inhabitants
] within 25 years.
Almost 100 wolves in the state died in traffic accidents since 2000.
Statistics also show the other causes.
Hit by cars, killed illegally or died of natural causes: In the past 25 years, 140 wolves were found dead in Saxony-Anhalt, according to the database of the Federal Documentation and Advisory Center on Wolves.
The causes of death were in 98 cases traffic accidents, in 18 cases illegal killings were proven, and in 13 cases the wolves died of natural causes. In several cases [

] the causes of death were unclear or still unknown. The number of wolves found dead nationwide in Germany [

] between 2000-2025 was 1,315.
Among the ten most recently reported cases are 2 from Saxony-Anhalt. On October 13, a puppy died in a traffic accident in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district, and on October 6, a puppy died in an accident in Jerichower Land near Parchen.

Wildcat Mother chases away a Wolf
Biologists from the German Wildlife Foundation photographed a wildcat mother driving off a wolf.
The cat arches her back and hisses for 20 minutes until the wolf gives up.
A wildcat (same size as a house cat) prevented a wolf from eating her cubs. For over 20 minutes during
the night, the wolf tried to get to the 4 kitten, which are hidden in a hollow tree. Their mother patrolled
the trunk with her back arched and tail raised, keeping the wolf at bay. In the morning, all 5 are still alive. Later that day, the cat mother moved on with her cubs.
Along with much other data collected during the long-term research project that began in 2016, this proved that wildcats, which became extinct in Germany, are re-establishing themselves after about 200 years in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Animals that will keep Wolves away
The nature conservation project in the Tollense Valley could lead to controlled rewetting.
And incidentally creates a special, fortified tourist attraction.
On behalf of nature conservation: Farmer Matthias Schulz with his cattle.
Water buffaloes are among the more exotic species in Western Pomerania and Konik horses even more so.
But in the foreseeable future, such cattle and wild horses could become a regular part of the landscape, leastwise in the lower Tollense Valley – even living together.
NABU owns numerous Properties in the Tollense Valley
These ideas are currently discussed for the further development of a major nature conservation project near Alt Tellin, pursued by the NABU Foundation
"National Natural Heritage"
. The foundation owns numerous fragmented plots of land there and acquired additional areas near the river through further leases and land swaps.
Professor Michael Succow (left), recipient of the Alternative Nobel Prize, expressed his support.
In spring, a herd of Angus cattle from the Schulz family farm in Jagetzow began grazing
approximately 40 hectares. The Schulz family rescued them from the verge of starvation.
Cattle now thriving
This breed is known for their docile temperament and was reinforced primarily with Simmental cattle,
to ensure that all project areas can be managed. Now 85 bulls, cows and calves romp around there.
Koniks are very robust wild horses and particularly defensive against wolves.
Their purpose is to ensure that shrubs don't encroach on the landscape and enough plants remain to increase biodiversity. Since the second half of the 20th century, biodiversity declined significantly there.
Large Sections of the River were straightened during the GDR era
Particularly during the GDR era, large sections of the Tollense River were straightened, oxbow lakes were closed off and weirs were built. The aim was to control the water level and to make better use of the adjacent meadows for fodder production.
The Tollense river was heavily straightened in its lower reaches and equipped with weirs.
Through precisely controlled grazing and (in other areas) targeted mowing using technology, areas will be structured to attract new animals. The focus is primarily on insects and birds, including the endangered lesser spotted eagle.
Long-term Goal is to enhance over 160 Hectares along a 14-kilometer Stretch
"Our long-term plan is to ecologically enhance over 160 hectares along a 14-kilometer section of the Tollense Valley,"
explained Jonas Arndt from NABU. This stretch begins downstream from Wietzow (Vorpommern-Greifswald) and extends to beyond Vanselow (Mecklenburgische Seenplatte).
The aim is also, and especially, to create a continuous strip of land under the auspices of the foundation.

Cattle commonly found in this region aren't intended to be the only large animals introduced as part of the project. The medium-term goal is to achieve permanent water retention through the controlled throttling of drainage ditches, ultimately leading to the rewetting of former peatlands.
Tourist Attraction and Meat Suppliers

(MiLaN), which actively supported the NABU project from the outset. They are well aware that these animals, which are quite undemanding and peaceful, could serve as both a source of meat and a tourist attraction.

During a site visit, Professor Michael Succow, a renowned biologist and agricultural scientist, suggested also introducing the aforementioned Konik horses, ideally forming mixed herds with them. This would effectively address two problems, according to the recipient of the Right Livelihood Award (Alternative Nobel Prize).
Konik stallions pose a real Threat to Isengrim's Life
These wild horses eat the tough grasses that cattle leave untouched and are known for their alertness, aggression and defensiveness against wolves. Where Konik stallions graze, the likelihood of a predator attack drops dramatically. The clever wolf knows the mortal danger.
Professor Succow praised the planned renaturalization of the Tollense Valley. This renaturalization isn't intended to lead to wildness, but rather to preserve the area as a valuable cultural landscape for all – simply through management.
Groundwater formation: The highest slopes in Western Pomerania's inland stretch along the Tollense river.
Besides greater biodiversity and new value chains through tourism and organic meat production, this also provides benefits for the supply of clean drinking water. Groundwater recharge is particularly strong on such valley slopes. The project on the Tollense River could even have positive effects far beyond its immediate region.

NABU criticizes Plans for regular Wolf Hunting - Wolves in the Crosshairs again
NABU Thuringia is sharply criticizing the first draft of the amendment to the Federal Hunting Act.
Regular hunting of wolves would be permitted, despite their unfavourable conservation status.

NABU argues that general hunting will neither reduce livestock depredation nor eliminate legal uncertainties surrounding culling. The amendment thus fails to achieve its objectives.
"The current draft legislation is a dangerous dead end. Including the wolf on the list of huntable species is counterproductive. It was long possible to take action against wolves exhibiting conspicuous behaviour under federal nature conservation law,"
says Silvester Tamás, spokesperson for the state working group on lynx and wolf at NABU Thuringia.
"Hunting could have fatal consequences. Here in Thuringia, the wolf population is so small that the planned change in the law could even lead to the extinction of subpopulations. We even have a legally binding obligation under EU law to actively promote the entire wolf population within the state."
The NABU criticizes, above all, the actions of the state government (coalition of the CDU, BSW and SPD) which advocated for allowing wolf hunting in the future. Many politicians lack any understanding of how to work in a solution-oriented and goal-oriented manner with regard to EU nature conservation law. Instead of addressing the problems of livestock farmers, politicians are bowing to pressure from lobbyists who want to hunt wolves, but whose interests represent only a fraction of the population. Silvester Tamás says:
"The fact is: Fewer wolves do not automatically mean fewer attacks. Even a single wolf can cause significant damage if he encounters unprotected livestock. If hunting disrupts the family structure, the wolves' behaviours can change unpredictably, and the number of attacks can increase, even in well-protected herds. Effective livestock protection therefore remains essential."
Anyone who claims that hunting wolves automatically creates more security is stoking fears at the expense of protected species and raising false hopes among livestock farmers. There is no automatic mechanism in nature conservation law that allows us to simply open fire on living beings whenever certain interest groups deem them excessive.
The majority of people in Germany want the wolf.
Instead of indiscriminate hunting, NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union) calls on the federal and state governments to fully cover the costs of the additional personnel and material expenses for livestock protection and to establish competent on-site consultation services for specific livestock protection.
"We were long calling for the establishment of a livestock protection center that proactively approaches livestock farmers, develops solutions for effective livestock protection together with them and promotes these measures,"
says Silvester Tamás.
"Most wolf attacks occured where livestock protection weren't properly implemented or sometimes not implemented at all."
Federal figures show that the
number of livestock kills by wolves decreased by 25% in 2024 compared to the previous year, despite an increase in the wolf population in Germany. This decline was not due to wolf culls or hunting, but solely to the consistent implementation of livestock protection across the country.
Targeted culling of wolves should be permitted in the future where wolves repeatedly overcome optimal livestock protection measures or exhibit conspicuous or aggressive behavior towards humans.
"Last but not least, the planned amendment will continue to create legal uncertainties surrounding culling, especially for hunters,"
said Tamás.
"The wolf remains a species protected under EU law, and its management is subject to strict regulations. The current draft legislation is completely incompatible with EU law.
This was now also confirmed by a legal opinion commissioned by the NABU."

The NABU (currently around 872,100 members and 87,000 supporters) needs to speak out for wolves even more. Good articles on NABU's own website unfortunately do little to counter the ugly smear campaigns with completely exaggerated numbers and baseless accusations.
On this occasion I extend my sincere thanks again to the association
'Friends of Free-Living Wolves'
in Wolfsburg (Lower Saxony). Their court injunction ensured that the wolf, which was authorized for culling under dubious circumstances, is still alive. The time window for shooting the wolf was missed.
Now the wolf killers need another attempt; and somehow the hunters in Lower Saxony must be blind.
Of course they're not blind…most hunters don't want to shoot the wolf!

Legal Tugging-War over Wolf in Friedeburg continues
The district of Wittmund filed an appeal against a ruling by the Oldenburg Administrative Court.
The court previously ruled in favour of animal rights activists and revoked a permit to shoot the wolf.
A spokesperson for the district confirmed on Thursday [
yesterday
] that an appeal was filed with the Higher Administrative Court of Lower Saxony in Lüneburg. At the end of November, the district had authorized the shooting of the wolf after further attacks on cattle. This authorization was overturned by the Oldenburg Administrative Court after animal rights activists from the
"Friends of Free-Living Wolves"
association filed a lawsuit. The court stated that
"various obvious alternatives"
to shooting the wolf weren't considered. The court cited the reinforcement of fences as an example.

Wolves in the National Park
Important for Nature?
Wolves are returning to Bavaria for about 10 years. The first wolf pups were born in the Bavarian Forest National Park in 2017. Since then, the wolf population grew in the border region between Bavaria and the Czech Republic. What does this mean for nature?
When wildlife ecologist Marco Heurich reviewed footage from a camera trap set up for lynx in the summer of 2015, he was surprised to find a photo of a wolf. This wolf settled in the vast area encompassing the Bavarian Forest and Šumava National Parks in the Czech Republic. After a female wolf also migrated to the area, the first wolf pups in Bavaria were born in 2017.
The newly formed family retreated to the Czech side. Further families formed from the offspring and other newly arrived wolves. 5 families, one pair and one lone wolf are currently in the area of the two national parks (2023/2024 census). Their core territories lie in Czechia, but they repeatedly venture into Bavaria.
Do Wolves play an important Role?
Marco Heurich launched a research project. The question: Do the wolves have an impact on the forest and its inhabitants? He knows from studies in Yellowstone National Park that the return of wolves had a positive effect on nature.
"It lead to more pronghorns, more grizzlies again and the forest regenerated better."
In the two national parks in Czechia and Bavaria, the largest animals (red deer) had no natural enemies until the wolves return. In the Bavarian Forest National Park alone, there are approximately 700 red deer.
The largest Animal Species
in the National Park must still be hunted.
Even though the protected area is designed to allow nature to take its course, this doesn't apply to red deer. In late autumn, they are lured into so-called winter enclosures and fed to prevent too many animals from migrating into adjacent forests. Red deer can cause considerable damage to forests, especially to young trees that are crucial for forest conversion in the face of climate change. Therefore, their population must be
"regulated"
(hunted).
Radio Collars reveal the Wolves' Whereabouts.
Czech and Bavarian scientists work closely together on this project. 11 wolves in Czechia were fitted with radio collars. The scientists can thus track their routes, which lead them to their prey. Around 360 wolf scat samples were also analyzed. The research, funded by EU grants, began 2.5 years ago. Now, initial results are available. The Bavarian wolves primarily prey on red deer. Beavers are the second most common prey, followed by wild boar and roe deer.
The red deer adapted to the predators, became more cautious, spent less time in the forest and more time in open areas. Wildlife ecologists and the directors of the two national parks view the wolves' return as a positive development for both protected areas.
